[I] bug: HuggingFace repo interface inconsistently fails across different requests [opendal]
mhambre opened a new issue, #8107:
URL: https://github.com/apache/opendal/issues/8107
### OpenDAL version or commit
v58.0
### Affected service or component
services/hf
### Describe the bug
Across all repositories some operations consistently work (listing, reading, etc.) However with some repositories other operations like write and delete fail.
### Steps to Reproduce
1. Create a HuggingFace repo with uppercase letters in the name (e.g. user/My-Repo), and get a token with write access.
2. Build an hf operator for that repo, but pass the repo id in all lowercase:
```rust
let op = Operator::new(
HfBuilder::default()
.repo_type("model")
.repo_id("user/my-repo")
.token(&token),
)?
.finish();
```
3. List works fine.
```rust
let entries = op.list("/").await?; // ok, all files show up
```
4. Now write (or delete) a file.
```rust
op.delete("test.txt").await?; // failure
```
### Actual Behavior
OpenDAL returns an error along the lines of (some noisy headers removed):
```json
Unexpected (persistent) at delete, context: {
uri: https://huggingface.co/api/models/user/my-repo/commit/main,
response: Parts {
status: 307,
version: HTTP/1.1,
headers: {
"content-type": "text/plain; charset=utf-8",
"content-length": "82",
"location": "/api/models/user/My-Repo/commit/main",
"x-powered-by": "huggingface-moon",
...
}
},
service: hf,
deleted: 0
} => unknown error, scheme: hf, path: test.txt
```
### Expected Behavior
File deletes successfully.
### Additional Context
This problem is produced by the fact that HuggingFace's API allows clients to treat IDs as case-insensitive by redirecting requests to the canonical path (case-sensitive) via a 307 redirect to which the client is expected to redirect. For GETs (list, read, stat) we redirect automatically, but for POST requests (e.g. XET commit, delete) the client fails to redirect the requests because the body isn't cloneable, thus we surface the 307 as an Unexpected error.
### Reproduction confirmation
- [x] I reproduced this issue against the affected component. For a service-specific report, I used the actual service rather than only a mock, emulator, or source-code analysis.
### Are you willing to submit a PR to fix this bug?
- [x] Yes, I would like to submit a PR.

<!-- Answer -->
Hi @mhambre! I'm [Dosu](https://go.dosu.dev/dosubot) and I'm helping the Apache OpenDAL team.
Your root cause analysis is spot on. The HuggingFace backend currently only exposes `stat`, `read`, and `list` capabilities [[1]](https://github.com/apache/opendal/blob/27d5677d4526519313cbce00cd28f8fbcc099642/core/src/services/huggingface/backend.rs#L176-L188), and the [docs explicitly mark write and delete as unchecked](https://github.com/apache/opendal/blob/27d5677d4526519313cbce00cd28f8fbcc099642/core/src/services/huggingface/docs.md#L12-L14). So the 307 you're seeing comes from HuggingFace's case-insensitive redirect behavior on the commit API endpoint, and the POST body can't be replayed after a redirect.
Even though OpenDAL's `HttpClient` contract states it must support 3xx redirects [[2]](https://github.com/apache/opendal/blob/27d5677d4526519313cbce00cd28f8fbcc099642/core/src/raw/http_util/client.rs#L60-L61), `reqwest` won't automatically re-send a POST body on a 307 since the body stream has already been consumed — this is standard HTTP client behavior rather than an OpenDAL-specific limitation.
For your PR, the most targeted fix would be to **canonicalize the `repo_id` before building URLs**. The `repo_id` is stored as a plain `String` in `HuggingfaceCore` [[3]](https://github.com/apache/opendal/blob/27d5677d4526519313cbce00cd28f8fbcc099642/core/src/services/huggingface/core.rs#L31-L39) and used directly when constructing API URLs [[4]](https://github.com/apache/opendal/blob/27d5677d4526519313cbce00cd28f8fbcc099642/core/src/services/huggingface/core.rs#L58-L67). During `build()` (or lazily on first request), you could make a cheap HEAD/GET to resolve the canonical casing from a redirect `Location` header and store the corrected value. This avoids relying on redirect behavior for POST requests entirely.
If write/delete support via the HF commit API is also in scope for your PR, that would address the broader gap, but the canonicalization alone would fix the immediate case-mismatch bug you reported.
Would you like pointers on where to slot in the canonicalization logic?

You're right, apologies for that! The indexed snapshot I was working from was stale and didn't reflect the current state of the repo. Thanks for the callout — I'll be more careful about flagging when cited content may be outdated.
