Ha! Nailed it!
I've traced the cause of the 16k bug - just gotta figure out how to fix
it now :-)
Irritating thing is it was obfuscated by a bit of code I recall being
dubious about when I first reviewed the Win32 version. Ah well.

Shit, was the a problem for long? There's now a /usr/local/bin/rcsmerge on
taz, just a soft link to /usr/bin/rcsmerge.
