--------------------------------------------
Reopening for a couple reasons:
1. As suggested (by Shawn Jiang and antoine_) we need to better document the correct configuration steps for remote deployment via the GEP to work properly
2. antione_ is still experiencing problem(s)

Hi Antoine, what versions of the Geronimo server are you using on both the remote and local machines ?? Also, can you provide me with the artifact that you're trying to deploy so that I can see if I can duplicate the problem ??

[jira] Commented: (GERONIMODEVTOOLS-537) Remote server deployment

Alexandros Karypidis commented on GERONIMODEVTOOLS-537:
-------------------------------------------------------
Actually, this also happens for local servers when the listen address does not include 127.0.0.1.
I am using Geronimo 2.2/w jetty on sun-jdk1.6.0_17 and I need to run two server instances. So I define a listen address of 127.0.0.1 for one installation and 127.0.0.2 for another.
I can start/stop both installations from Eclipse, but I can only deploy to the one listening at 127.0.0.1. When I try to deploy to 127.0.0.2, I get the same exception.

Hi,
What's the os of your remote server? Is it linux?
I tried it on linux and got the same error.
But if I add an entry in /etc/hosts and delete the original one, then it worked fine. So I think it's due to the host name mapping.
eg.
the host name is "abc" and ip is "1.2.3.4"
add "1.2.3.4 abc" in /etc/hosts
If "127.0.0.1 abc" exist in /etc/hosts, please delete it.
Hope it helps!

[jira] Closed: (GERONIMODEVTOOLS-537) Remote server deployment
fails with connection exception
Posted by "Tim McConnell (JIRA)" <ji...@apache.org>.
Tim McConnell closed GERONIMODEVTOOLS-537.
------------------------------------------
Resolution: Invalid
Here are the correct sequence of steps to facilitate deployment to a remote server using the GEP:
1. First define a local server and make sure it starts within Eclipse. If it starts okay, in the Servers view of the Java EE perspective in Eclipse double-click on the server and update the hostname from "localhost" to the remote server's hostname or IP.
2. Similarly, on the remote system update the RemoteDeployHostname value in config-substitutions.properties to listen on something besides localhost (i.e., use remote server's hostname or IP as above).
3. Leave Eclipse up and then start the server on the remote system. Even though you can't use Eclipse to start/stop the server on the remote system Eclipse should still synchronize with the remote server. If it does synchronize you will see the status of the server in Eclipse change from "Stopped" to *Started" (again in the Servers view). This make take a few seconds to synchronize, but then you should be able to deploy to that Server.
4. Ensure the server on the remote system is still running and then try to deploy via Eclipse.

Hi,
As said Tim, I am still experiencing problems.
I run Ubuntu 8.10, JDK 1.5 from Sun, Eclipse Ganymede for JEE developpers on a clean installation.
Following the 4 steps described by Tim above, I have the following error : "Connection to the deployment manager failed". I happens when the plugin try to synchronize with the remote server. Everything is working fine on localhost.
The associated exception is the following one:

So I guess this is a different problem from the one originally reported. Do you have any idea what I can do to solve it ?

I use Geronimo v2.1.3 on both machines. This is also the same JDK on both machines. The remote machine does have Eclipse neither a graphical interface, it is just a server.
As I was testing Geronimo, I was just trying to deploy the basic jaxws-calculator example provided on this website. I will attach a JAR.
I did not try on the command line until now so I did it, thanks to Joao. In my case the result is different I am asked the password for the and after that I get a ConnectException : the connection is refused.

So, on the command line, I seem to pass the stage of the deployment manager.
For now I have no explanation on why the connection is refused : there is no firewall on both machines or on the network between them. there is only a switch between them. I can connect to the machine with SSH, on the admin console...
I will investigate to see if there could have some more reasons to this.
