[jira] [Created] (INFRA-4918) Pootle: AOO supports more languages than currently supported by the Pootle instance at Apache

Juergen Schmidt created INFRA-4918:
--------------------------------------

Summary: Pootle: AOO supports more languages than currently supported by the Pootle instance at Apache
                 Key: INFRA-4918
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/INFRA-4918
             Project: Infrastructure
          Issue Type: Improvement
      Security Level: public (Regular issues)
         Environment: browser application
            Reporter: Juergen Schmidt

The Pootle software supports more languages by default than currently available at the instance running at Apache. On a local Pootle instance I have even more languages by default.

Pootle adminstrators should be able to add further languages via the web frontend. (I would volunteer to help as an administrator)

Supported languages at AOO: http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Languages
Pootle language information: http://translate.sourceforge.net/wiki/l10n/pluralforms

it works in general if you have full admin rights of course, I never complained about this. I could add languages as well with the appropriate user rights.

Please see the 2 links that I have provided initially. The second one give detailed information about your question. And the first one is for reference mainly what was supported in the past for OOo.

I don't have a pootle.prefs file at hand which supports all the languages, my local instance don't have a pootle.prefs file at all and creating one didn't worked well so far. It would require further analysis.

I would first uncomment one of the not supported languages in the existing pootle.prefs file and would restart pootle to see if it change something. If that works it should be possible to add further languages this way. Otherwise the web frontend is a working option to add further languages.

Juergen Schmidt commented on INFRA-4918:
----------------------------------------

The current Pootle instance don't support all languages that are supported by AOO. Compared to a local test instance (default installation on an Ubuntu VM) Pootle supports more languages by default. But anyway with the right admin rights new languages can be easy added via a web frontend. I could do it on my own with the necessary admin rights and of course would prefer to do it to reduce the workload on you guys.

But it makes only sense if jira-4917 gets solved. This issue is even more worse and make the Pootle server unusable. I believe that the Pootle server had this problem since the beginning and was never tested for production use. It works well in my local test instance and that is the reason why I have suggested to setup a complete new Pootle server and test it before making it available.

I really would like to support and help where I can and where I am allowed to help. Need some advice...

thanks, I will do my best. But keep in mind that the Pootle server as it is today is not really useable and issue 4917 is still not fixed.

Do you have a special or preferred place where changes should be documented?

sorry but I don't know how I can give me Pootle admin rights via cmd line. The user management goes via ldap. Maybe it's possible but I don't know how. But an admin can me easy grant the rights via the frontend.

[jira] [Commented] (INFRA-4918) Pootle: AOO supports more languages than currently supported by the Pootle instance at Apache

Posted by "Juergen Schmidt (JIRA)" <ji...@apache.org>.
    [ https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/INFRA-4918?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=13409254#comment-13409254 ]

Juergen Schmidt commented on INFRA-4918:
----------------------------------------

Any progress on this?

We have people who want to work on Uyghur translation and this language is not yet supported. Adding a new language should be less than 5 minutes.

I think the installation has a general problem because a clean fresh Pootle installation supports more languages by default.

I have a local Pootle instance running for testing purposes and there this feature worked.

The buttons are available at the Apache instance but when you click the accept button nothing happened. The string should be copied into the edit field.

Juergen Schmidt commented on INFRA-4918:
----------------------------------------

I don't have the admin rights to add languages via the web frontend and I don't be able to create or delete projects.

I only have root access on the server and can use the command line tools to sync for example the storage from db into po files etc. and I have used this heavily for our releases.

But the pootle.prefs file contains a section for Khmer which is uncomment but available via the frontend. It's confusing and my local instance don't have a pootle.prefs file at all.

You seem to know what needs doing, go ahead and do it.

Juergen Schmidt commented on INFRA-4918:
----------------------------------------

well I am able to watch the pootleasfuser database but I don't know for sure if I can simply set the "is_superuser" field for my account in the "auth_user" table and of it's enough. Other admin accounts have also set the "is_staff" field. Means I don't know the database layout and what all the entries mean. I would prefer if somebody can simply grant the access via the frontend. It shouldn't be too much work.

Not supporting volunteers in an appropriate way is sub optimal for our project, in the worst case they loose their motivation and went away. Translator resources are seldom and often only a few people work on the translation.

You are now a Superuser.

Please document every change you do so that I and others know about it. (Or I'll remove that access again)
Please do not do anything to affect other projects unless its of global benefit.
Remember this is a translate service for ALL Apache projects that want it.

Can somebody help? If an admin can grant me Pootle admin rights I can solve this problem on my own.
