Jmeter support for FTPS(FTP over SSL) and SFTP(FTP over SSH)
Hi Team,
I need to stress test an application.
Application Description:
• The application serves the purpose of Secure File Transfer Management and
storage.
• It securely collects, stores, manages, and distributes the data.
• It’s hosted on IIS.
• The user can upload and download data to/from the application server.
• Various interfaces are used for end user to upload-download data from the
server
• Interfaces use the following protocols to communicate between the server
and client machine
o HTTP(S)
o FTP over SSL(FTPS)
o FTP over SSH(SFTP)
The concern is to use Jmeter for file transfer using FTPS and SFTP.I have
not been successful in transferring a file from my machine to the server
using the ports 22(sftp) and 990(ftps).
Following errors are displayed for sftp and ftps respectively:
SFTP(22)
" Response message: org.apache.commons.net.MalformedServerReplyException:
Could not parse response code. "
FTPS(990)
" Response message: org.apache.commons.net.ftp.FTPConnectionClosedException:
Connection closed without indication. "
Appreciate your help in this regard.

Try the same command using an FTP client via the tunnel.
I suspect you may need to use Passive Mode to ensure the client works
via the tunnel.
Unfortunately JMeter does not support PASV mode currently.
[Feel free to raise a Bugzilla enhancement for this.]

jmeter :Invocation Java sampler as maven goal
Posted by INAMDAR Santosh <sa...@socgen.com>.
Hello All,
I have a Spring Batch Job module. I am trying to test the same using JMeter using information provided
below link
http://henry-tech-notes.blogspot.com/2006/10/testing-hessian-services-with-jmeter.html
I created a wrapper program BatchJobTest (extending org.apache.jmeter.protocol.java.sampler.AbstractJavaSamplerClient) and
Invoked the spring batch job. I am able to test the batch job by running it from jmeter GUI.
My next step would be to use the jmeter script in jmeter - Hudson plunin.
https://wiki.jenkins-ci.org/display/JENKINS/Performance+Plugin
while doing so , jmeter maven plugin fails by giving the below error
2011/12/15 13:16:37 ERROR - jmeter.protocol.java.sampler.JavaSampler: Thread Group 1-1@1ea25b6-Java Request Exception creating: com.sg.itec.arc.jmeter.BatchJobTest java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: com.sg.itec.arc.jmeter.BatchJobTest

Any idea on how to use the Jmeter Java Sampler in conjunction with Maven/Hudson ?

Hi,
I tried using stunnel to accept FTP connections and forwarding it to sftp
server.Jmeter connects to localhost and then to the server successfully.
Problem -1 :
While uploading/downloading a file from the server Jmeter displays the
following error message in response:

Problem - 2 :
Also, when observed in stunnel log the socket gets closed while reading for
data immediately after it has negotiated for ciphers.

Yes, that's generally true. However, I would only let that discourage me
if my Test Plan was already CPU bound as is (which in turn usually only
happens if the Plan is really damn complex or the system under test is
very heavy issue).
Under normal circumstances, stunnel *will* outperform both Jmeter and
any remote SSL service.

Take in mind that this may affect performance as this STunnel may cause a
bottle neck or just behave differently than really opening sftp connections.
Shmuel.

as a systems person, I'm inclined to suggest you set up a local stunnel
(see http://http://www.stunnel.org/) that accepts FTP connections on a
local port and forwards them as SFTP connections to the actual SFTP
server. Your Test Plan will tell Jmeter to connect to localhost instead
of the system under test.
Is FTP still using multiple connections? In that case, you may need to
make a second tunnel to provide the other port as well.

Felix

If you are willing to code it. You can write your custom Sampler or
implement the Java Sampler
Use a java library that supports the protocol you want
e.g.
http://www.jcraft.com/jsch/ for SFTP
http://commons.apache.org/net/ for FTPS

Hi Sebb,
Thanks for your quick response.
Actually, i am using FTP sampler provided by Jmeter(2.4) and not any 3rd
party FTP sampler.
Few more questions:
1. Is there any way where we can use Jmeter for these protocols...ie: Can we
customize it for ftps and sftp?
2. Any references to accomplish this?

Standard JMeter only supports the FTP sampler; merely changing the FTP
port will not change the protocol it uses.
I assume you must be using a 3rd-party FTP Sampler, in which case,
please ask the provider for advice.
