tomcat and log files

hi Listers,
Can kindly some one point to me how can i use the log fasility in tomcat ti
kig iut out fri my own sservlets and 
jsp's i show the log method in my classes but i dont know 
how to use it.
i would be gratefull for some pointers where to look how the thing is used
