the admin interface had been enhanced with new
commands.
while the james service is running, connect to admin
interface and execute command 'shutdown'. this will
shutdown James safely.

Maybe this could be of help:
In Tomcat, there is a command "tomcat start" and "tomcat stop". Those
can be used from a terminal session, but they map to java code, so this
would allow stopping from java code too (and/or ant).
Maybe this same strategy could be used for james?

Yes, it the telnet based admin(telnet ... 4555).
I guess it is the best way is to use the telnet based
admin util to shutdown.
Ctrl+C does not work to shutdown under linux.
Another can be, to find the process id of James and
kill ing the process. I was using this way(killing)
while i using James 1.2.1.

I just want to clarify what you mean by the 'admin interface'
Is it the telnet based utility 'JAMES RemoteAdministration Tool'?
I can see that there is a 'shutdown' command but I don't really want to
use the telnet based utility to shut down james. I would like to be able
to do this programmatically so that I can shutdown James using a simple
ant script. Any idea how to do this?
