[Issue 126050] New: Search/Replace on single cell does not work.

https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=126050

          Issue ID: 126050
        Issue Type: DEFECT
Summary: Search/Replace on single cell does not work.
           Product: Calc
           Version: 4.1.1
          Hardware: PC
                OS: Windows 7
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P3
         Component: editing
          Assignee: issues@openoffice.apache.org
          Reporter: jesse@kindwall.me

I have a relatively long string stored in a single cell.
Example:
"Thing-1!!!/Thing-2!!!/Thing-3/Thing-4!!!/Thing-5"

I want to replace all occurrences of "Thing" with "Bling" in this cell without
affecting the rest of the sheet. So I select this one cell, hit ctrl-F to open
the find & Replace dialog.

Search for:
Thing

Replace with:
Bling

Click the "More Options" button

Check the "Current selection only" option.

Click Replace All.

At this point i get a "Search key not found" message and no replacement is
done.

If I select even one other cell along with the target cell, the replacement
works as expected.

This is an oddly convoluted and unintuitive requirement for selecting a single
cell. It's also inconsistent with how other features work. If I want to copy
a single cell to the clipboard, I don't need to click, drag away, and drag back
before hitting ctrl-c. I just need to click once. Why is the single-cell
selection requirement different for copy/paste than for search/replace in
selection?

See help F1 , search term = selecting;cells

Selecting Multiple Cells
Mark a single cell

Do one of the following:
- Click, then Shift-click the cell.
- Pressing the mouse button, drag a range across two cells, do not release the
mouse button, and then drag back to the first cell. Release the mouse button.
You can now move the individual cell by drag and drop.

That's the way OpenOffice works.

To select a cell, for example A1,
- click A1
- drag to B1
- move back to A1
- leave the clicked button
With this selected single cell having blue selection color, the replacement
against
single cell as currently selected range works.

Okay, obviously that is how Open Office works, and it's documented to work that
way. But that doesn't answer my question.

Why?

Why doesn't simply clicking a cell also mark that cell?

Is there a use case that would specifically require the ability to select a
cell without marking it?

And even if there is, it doesn't seem applicable to the search/replace (current
selection only) operation. And since the copy to clipboard operation is smart
enough to know to copy only the selected cell if no cells are marked, I would
think that search/replace operation should also work that way.

Try this:

Open the search dialog and click the "More Options" button.
With the dialog open, click on an empty cell.
Note that the "Current selection only" checkbox gets disabled.

This makes sense since there is currently no selected content to search.

Now, with the dialog still open, try clicking on a cell that has data (but
don't mark it).

The "Current selection only" checkbox is re-enabled. This strongly implies
that there IS now selected content to search and that choosing this option will
work on the selected (unmarked) cell.
