[JavaOne] Struts Dinner & JUG

So, how about a dinner gathering of Struts Users during the upcoming JavaOne
conference this June in San Francisco? I'm volunteering the Silicon Valley
Struts User Group to set it up. We just need to choose a date and get some
idea of headcount so that reservations can be made in advance of the
conference for a hopefully large group of Struts Users. If there is enough
interest, maybe we could even convince Craig and/or some of the other Struts
Developers to join us.

Related to this, Sun has recently revamped their Java User Group (JUG)
program. The top 25 JUGs based upon membership get special treatment:

  <http://servlet.java.sun.com/jugs/top25.jsp>

I think there are enough of us to easily qualify for a top 25 ranking and
the associated member benefits that go with that. It just depends upon how
many people are willing to take the time to join a Struts User Group JUG. I
have already setup a virtual Struts User Group JUG here:

  <http://servlet.java.sun.com/jugs/virtual.jsp>

Unfortunately, the virtual (a.k.a. on-line only) ones are lumped together on
one long page. It is sorted chronologically based upon when the JUG was
created though. The Struts User Group JUG is 2nd to last right now and the
post date is Monday, April 14th.

You need to be a Java Developer Connection (JDC) member (free, just requires
registration) before you can join a JUG. If you are not already a JDC
member, you will be prompted to fill out the JDC registration form before
joining the JUG.

There was a recent discussion on the list about whether Sun is really
supportive of Struts. I am fortunate to live in Silicon Valley where many of
Sun's developer relations folks are located. Based on my personal
interactions with several developer relations folks at Sun, I think they
would be supportive once they realized how many Struts Users there really
are in the Java developer community. Joining this virtual JUG is an
excellent way of communicating to Sun that you want their continued support
of Struts going forward.

That's all folks, Van

P.S. Since we are all teetotalers, I'll make sure that the restaurant does
not serve alcohol. ;-)

Sorry 6000 miles and teetotal restaurant mean I can't attend the dinner :-(

But I have signed up for the JUG :-)
