[math] Please review Christian's patch for MATH-703

Dear all,
Christian has done a great work at splitting up the distribution
hierarchy. His patch is in good shape and could be committed soon, but
for a few questions I've raised. I would very much like to have the
point of view of more expert people on these, so if you get the
chance, could you please go and have a look to MATH-703?
