Recommendation engine

I'm using Recommendation Engine and have some questions about this. The
following data requirement means I *must* send rate and buy event, but
,When I test with just send rate event it still works well . So my question
is Do I really need to send both rate event and buy event?  ThanksEvent
Data Requirements

By default, the template requires the following events to be collected:

   - user 'rate' item events
   - user 'buy' item events
