conflict with MSWORD
I trust this is being sent to an appropriate address and that I will get a
real reply, not reference to a blog or similar [never useful for me
personally].
Having installed OpenOffice 4.1 on several computers which already had a
version of MSWORD installed, I find
1] Microsoft Word is no longer usable on each of those computers, in fact
seems to have been uninstalled.
2] A document opened and edited in OpenOffice, then transferred to another
computer on which is installed MSWORD, can not be opened in MSWORD.
3] These observations apply whether the version of MSWORD concerned is of
2010 or earlier vintage.
This interferes with the way in which I wish to conduct my affairs. I wish
to have access to both word-processing programmes on the same computers and to
convert documents from one to the other at will. How can I do those
things?

This is selectable in the installation process.

When you installed OO, it set the file associations to it. Word is
still there and if you right click on a file, you should see the option
to choose it. It's entirely possible to have more than one app
available to handle a document type, but only one can be default. If
you wish, you can change the defaults back to Work. On the Windows
systems I have here, I have OpenOffice, LibreOffice and Word viewer
installed. If I just click on the file icon, the default app will
open. If I right click on it, I can choose the app I want to use at
that time.

word is still on your computer, but the '.doc' files are now opened with with openoffice, most probably because you have chosen to make such an association during the installation process.
to open a '.doc' file with word, either:
(1) right-click the file and choose word from the 'open with' list
or
(2) launch word from the start menu and make use of the 'file - open' menu item or an analogous item on the ribbon.
if you want to restore the association of the '.doc' files with word, choose 'other program' (or similar; my windows is not in english), select word and tick the 'use this program by default' option.

most likely, you have saved the file as '.odt' rather than '.doc'. word can open the '.odt' files only if the appropriate plugin is installed.
to save as '.doc', choose 'microsoft word 97/200/xp (.doc)' from the drop-down list in the 'file - save as' dialogue.
to set '.doc' as the default format, choose the same from the 'tools - options - load/save - general - always save as' list with 'text document' in the 'document type' list.

now you can see that it is posible. however, the more times you transfer from one program to another, the grater is the chance to get an error. you should remember that microsoft does not publish the '.doc' format's specification, and it is therefore impossible to follow that specification exactly. it is a good practice to keep backups of important files somewhere to prevent data loss.
