[Tobago] - how to know which tab is active

This should be very easy, but I've tried tabChangeListener (which I can
get the id of the tabGroup) , looked at the tabState object stuff and
nothing is apparent after almost a day of research. I see how it was
easily done in myFaces, but not with Tobago.
 
This can't possibly be so difficult, can it?

client side tab or ajax enabled tab?
