I just wanted to tell you I was sad.

Let's just get over it, I'm not looking for appreciation, sorry if I was
misunderstood, it happens sometimes, no big deal.

Come on now guys. Let us be productive.
Perhaps this situation has arisen because the work on Forrest
automation has not been discussed much on forrest-dev. There
seems to be plenty happening in that area in the background.

I would like to understand how it works. Hey, one day we
suddenly and magically had a website. Great, thanks, but how?

Obviously standards are necessary here, so we do need to
be aware of them and implement them. However, we do not all
subscribe to all mailing lists, so how are we know?

(By the way, it makes perfect sense to me to use committer
usernames as IDs.)

Settle down Ken. John/Steven were just wondering why the sudden
change. It is the duty of committers to watch the CVS log messages
to ensure that strange things do not creep in. If we see something
odd, especially something inconsistent such as IDs, then we must
speak up immediately.

Perhaps a better cvs log message would have headed this whole
issue off. I think that committers need to briefly say "Why"
as well as "What".

My understanding is that it is used to make it doubly-clear
that the author was, in fact, trying to make a joke and
was not being serious.

Ken, you sound serious to me.

Anyway back to your last sentence. You seem to indicate that
we do not value your work ... quite the opposite. I am often
stunned by the work that you do in various projects. I do
express appreciation now and then (look to the archives).
I wonder if you have read the excellent new Forrest Primer,
wherein praise is lavished upon Nicola Ken. Please come
back, we need you.

Nicola,

You sure have been working hard lately!

Maybe that's why you're a bit cranky over Steven's comments.
I wouldn't think he meant to make it sound as offensive as you took it.

You're doing a great job buddy, just keep rockin'

Personally: +0. I forget quite often to even fill out the
changes.xml! ;)

There is the argument that people can manage initials better
than names, but that's rather weak when most of the time
it's the person themself :)

I would say that, if it is decided, somebody just does a global
sed for everyone's ID.

I'd also like input from the other two founders - Sam, Stefano
are you still monitoring this list/project?

Ok, again.
It wasn't a decision. It was a test.

I was going to ask you all what you thought about using ids in the future,
but this had nothing to do with it.

Again: I don't want to impose anything.
It was a stupid *test*.

Again: I didn't change it because I wanted it to remain that way.
I changed it because I wanted to easily see changes in a page.
I could have added a DEBUG:AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA to the page, but it seemed a
bit too crass.

It's just a *test*, and it came to my mind because of the reasons I
mentioned.
It was not an attempt to make it that way.

What got me sad is that it was *percieved* like prevarication.
That's all.
                                   -oOo-

Now, since it seems you want to decide this, what do you think?

Can the user id be better?

*peace* Ken. It was just a change Steven and I weren't expecting. The
ID's have traditionally been the initials of your names. Prob because
it's easier to get NKB right for people than spell it in full! :)

It was. Everything you do in life, including me sending this
email is a decision. Nothing against that - you have too to live,
but you can't deny it.

It was only a recommendation - it hasn't been implemented. Also,
GUMP/Alexandria lives in Jakarta, Forrest has come out of XML/Cocoon, and
I'd much sooner follow their conventions.

<shrug/> what you do as lead developer for Centipede is completely
under your control. I thought this project was supposed to be a
community...

No, no, no. 99.999% of everything you've ever done has been excellent.
*PLEASE* don't get annoyed over something so trivial! However, it
shouldn't be a case of imposing something on the project (perhaps that
wasn't the word you ment to use?). This is supposed to be a team
effort.

> Gee, I've been working hard these days on the project and all I

We all know how hard you've been working on the project - and
it *IS* appreciated. You weren't getting 'turned down', but,
in all probability most people here arn't subscribed to Alexandria,
and even if they are (like me) they may have completely missed that
thread. (Typically, I don't read a thread to the end if I've lost
interest part way through...)

Sorry you're upset.

Sorry, I didn't think it was such a big issue changing *my* id.
AFAIK nobody asked what we wanted ids to be in the first place, nor that
there is a rule for it.

> I prob would have said yes, but it would have been nice

Gee, again I'm sorry, but this *isn't* a decision.
I'm just testing the cron job to make Forrest work, and it just happened
that at 20:00 o'clock, after a day full of work, I couldn't come up with a
better thing to change to easily see if pubblication worked.

You see, I didn't think discussing about my id is paramount now.

If you think it's important just start a discussion.
What's the problem?

I also said I was going to change for all projects using Centipede
descriptors, and nobody argued, hence I thought it was liked by the others
on the list.

Let me make it clear: I don't care what the id is, I don't feel like
discussing it -so do what you want-, I don't have any fealing of any sort
about ids, I don't want to impose anything, I will never ever try to impose
anything.

Gee, I've been working hard these days on the project and all I get is being
turned down by a stupid id.

I prob would have said yes, but it would have been nice

forrest.

Come to that, I'm subscribed to the alexandria list, with
