About the Desktop interface....is it slow????

Hello everyone,

I am a developer who has just started working with Jetspeed Portal. I chose
Jetspeed as my target portal some 6 months ago,
mainly because of the tremendous support that we get from this mailing list
and the fact that the new ajax interface was under development.
I was hoping that Ajax interface would basically prove what an slick user
interface would be like
Fast ,
Quick Response
Very Intuitive for the user to use.
I was hoping for an interface which would be as slick as that of
netvibes.com. ( Agreed that initial loading time is bit long but
subsequently it is very intuitive)

I installed the new Jetspeed 2.1 Minimal Installer) ..and then tried to use
the desktop . Unfortunately my experience with it was not really nice.
i found that desktop was slow , reloaded the page on clicking of the tabs,
and was not very slick.....maybe it was using a lot of dojo widgets ...not
really sure

I think i might be missing something really significant here, but is it the
way this is supposed to work??????
Isnt it possible to have a desktop which feels light. and has features of
netvibes and start.com etc

Regards,
Team Vit

We fully support fragment rendering in Jetspeed 2.1. That is exactly
how each portlet is rendered from the Desktop
Because of the nature of tabs being different pages in Jetspeed, we
re-render the entire page when switching tabs
Fragment rendering will be supported as a standard in the 2.0 spec

Rendering by ID is already available: try rendering a portlet like this:

http://localhost:8080/jetspeed/portlet?entity=dp-3&portlet=j2-
admin::LocaleSelector

The Desktop is a client-side aggregation taking a PSML file as the
instructions to render the page.
Each portlet fragment on the page is rendered individually, over a
URL such as the one shown above

Try navigating to the default page on the desktop
You will see that individual portlets are rendered separately
Additionally the action phase is handled as an "AJAX" request, and
all individual portlets are re-rendered over the portlet pipeline

Hi.

I just had thinked quite the same. Fragment refreshing would be a nice
to have. I came with an idea yesterday concerning this.

What if Jetspeed would provide an AJAX api which would render a fragment
by its id, whether it is a portlet or layout fragment wouldn't matter,
both would be rendered as it should. So the API would return instead of
the XML data the API now produces, the actual content, the html, of a
portlet (or page), and then that new content could be used to replace
the content of an existing fragment with the same id. The replacing
shouldn't be too hard, or am I wrong?

I'm not really familiar how the aggregrator works, but was going get
digging into it. Eould some thing like this fragment rendering be possible?

Mikko

Yes I`ve noticed it`s quite slow
I`ve posted something about misbehavior of the desktop interface with some
portlets
(i. e. wsrp-proxyportlet)

http://www.nabble.com/forum/ViewPost.jtp?post=10001302&framed=y

But anyway.. I like the approach.. at least it will be another reason to
convince customers in adopting Jetspeed instead of Liferay

cheers

If i may ask, what exactly are the internal requirements since i was under
the impression
that in any enterprise application the view can be segregated from the
internal logic.
please correct me if i am wrong but shouldn't it be possible to build the ui
using any library such as
prototype.

There is a lot of obvious optimization that has not yet occurred (e.g.

According to me , one change which could instantly make this faster would be
creating an improvement in the ajax api such that we could dynamically
re-render pages
without reloading the page. Is this feasible ?

This way, most of the dojo widgets would already be loaded in the browser,
so no "apparant" reloading
will take place ( i know even now it loads form the cache ) which would give
it the "slickness" required.
After the main reason of shifting to an ajax application is for the
responsiveness , dont u think?

Also, I wouldn't expect that most open source projects have as "slick" of a

Agreed , if not a demo as slick as netvibes , but at least it should not be
as slow as most users already have a picture in mind when we talk about an
ajax desktop
For all the positive aspects of jetspeed ..accepting this new *ajax* desktop
will be difficult
After all one has to *sell* this to the management. if you know what i
mean..

hi there,

yes, i totally agree with you andrew....jetspeed pretty much gets you where
u want to be
it is an amazing application with a lot of benefits for free.

i really like jetspeed and one day hope that i will become capable enough to
be able to contribute whatever i can to this project.

The reason i brought this point up , is because i sincerely believe that we
can make this much better that it already is.

If somebody can guide me on which places i could start if i wanted to change
the web interface completely, i would be glad to do it myself.

but to do that i need to know , why things were done as they were,
for example what the "internal requirements" of jetspeed were for example.

I would be honored if some body could clearly guide me on this
