Good performance testing tool?
Hi all,
I was looking for some good (free) performance testing tool. I came
across many of them but couldnt figure out which one should I go for.
Any comments about, what are the good performance testing tools
availaible.
My shortlist is as follows
http://portal.opensta.org/
http://jakarta.apache.org/jmeter/
http://httpd.apache.org/test/flood/
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/mstone/
http://www.pushtotest.com/ptt
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/itsolutions/intranet/downloads/webstres.asp
http://zing.ncsl.nist.gov/WebTools/tech.html
Thanks and Best Regards,

well the best ones available are jprobe and optimizeIT but they are not free

Ok got that , One more question
A test plan could comprise of various possiblities, like a set of sql queries to the db directly using the connection
pool defaults?
Thanks

Initially I had aimed for writing a plug in but was not able to do it
So I used the specific characteristics of my application
I'll explain
we have a tomcat server for deploying and running the jsps
I wrote a piece of code in java that calculates the free and available
memory in the current jvm
To make it possible that the code runs in the application server's jvm I
used a JSP that uses the java code to calculate the memory profile
I add this jsp at the end of every test plan
and hence get the memory profile during that plan

You mean u have written a plugin to calculate the memory resources utilized while test plan is getting executed?
Or is there a way to do it in Jmeter without depending on the plugin.?

Re: Good performance testing tool?
Posted by gautamjha <ga...@netedgecomputing.com>.
well what i have done is built a thread for calculating memory resources
utilized while a test plan is running this thread runs in parallel.
And writes to a file the memory used, memory free etc.
The results analysis is not done by me
I just have to produce the graphs and the processing times basically data
provoded by the listneners
Analysis is done by ohters

So Gautham
What method do you follow ? which optimizer do u use in tandem to Jmeter? and how are the results analysed?

very true this is a drawback of jmeter where i cant prepare a plan
containing many different paths depending on some parameter.
but then the biggest advantage of jmeter is ---
its FREE
very easy to use
java based so all good features of java inherited

HI Gautam,
Using the JDBC request option is one and the other aspect of Jmeter which i did try to put to use was creating a test
plan containing multiple user actions on the application.
As far as testing with JDBC request was concerned , i could not understand the results it was displaying against the DB
which is mysql. I will tell you why.
The mysql database would have chaching property and should be displaying request times in the decending order instead it
is dispplaying in the ascending order .(which i think should not be the case)
Am i making any sense Gautam?
Thanks
Vijay

hi vijay
what i used this tool was for load testing my web-application to simulate
load of multiple queries at a single instant. I had to analyse the
processing times and create a memory profiler alongside the tool(details of
which if u want i can provide)
can u be alittle more specific in ur problem that u are facing

Gautham,
Can you please provide details as to how you have used this tool.? There have beensome problems that i have come across
while using this for our applications which are all Web based.
Specifically when i was trying to create multiple instances of a single entity using multiple users.
Thanks
Vijay

Ok but you are sure that it works fine to create multiple instances without any error?
Please give details of your experience with JMeter for performance testing of Web based Applications.
Thanks
Vijay

Re: Good performance testing tool?
Posted by Scott Eade <se...@backstagetech.com.au>.
Naturally the people on this list are going to recommend JMeter.
I personally selected JMeter over openSTA primarily because it would execute
on non-Windows platforms and it is implemented in Java (rather than C) and
hence I feel more comfortable if the need arises to tweak the testing tool
itself.
Being script based I would expect openSTA to support conditional logic, this
was not supported in JMeter last time I looked, but I think it is heading in
that direction.
I suspect the JMeter users and developers are more responsive to queries
than the equivalent openSTA people, but my opinion is likely to be biased by
the fact that I monitor the JMeter groups, not the openSTA ones.
JMeter also provides mechanisms for testing much more than just web
applications.
It is easy to set up ant try out. I would recommend giving JMeter a go.
HTH,
Scott
