   Sorry for chiming in late, but I believe Hive uses 0 for unknown stats. Also, Hive doesn't necessarily maintain valid stats for managed tables. For that, there is an config. 
   
   I agree with Bowen that we should at least verify whether -1 causes any issue for Hive.
