Another PR was made (by Attila) on the 3 branch: [https://github.com/apache/freemarker/pull/80]

3 was already on Gradle, but that was unfinished, and used an old Gradle. So the PR is a rewrite which also tries to be similar to the 2.3 Gradle build (the main difference being that 3 uses actual modules, not just multiple Gradle source sets).
