[DISCUSS] Metron IRC channel

Hi everyone,

There are currently two IRC channels on FreeNode for Metron:
- #apache-metron
- #apache-metron-dev

One channel is maybe enough as we are less than 5 users.

What do you think? Which one to keep ?

I'm not opposed to slack; I'd just like one official avenue for realtime
interaction, so if we choose slack, I suggest shuttering irc.

1. Agreed, personally willing to accept that.
2. I know Spot is doing it, that's the only other incubator I follow.
3. I don't do slack on my phone, but I do have IRC, so that's completely up
to the person. Valid point though - breaks are good.

Re: [DISCUSS] Metron IRC channel

I like slack. I don’t think I would complain if the group chose to move to
it, but I can see some possible issues

1. The message limit. Although I currently don’t do this, I have in the
past had a persistant screen session + irssi + logging to keep irc logs
etc going back in time. This is not possible with slack as far as I know.
And it is all fun and games until you look for something and see the 10,000
message limit. Would we care about this is the question.
2. Freenode is the apache ‘standard’. Are there any other incubator
products doing this? Would there then be BOTH irc and slack and further
split ourselves ( public email lists + irc + slack )?
3. Some may like the fact that irc isn’t or can’t be on your phone, or
emailing you notifications ;)

AFAIK it gives full edit capabilities to the bot, and allows delegation of
additional access to others.

double check it. Also, if someone is a moderator of the dev@metron list we
can send email to
dev-allow-subscribe-asfbot=urd.zones.apache.org@metron.apache.org to set up
the JIRA reporting, and remove the "In order..." part of the below message.

We discussed this on the mailing list and we'd like to add the ASFBot to
#apache-metron with Git and JIRA reporting
<https://wilderness.apache.org/manual.html#commits> enabled. I believe
this would look something like this, for clarity of intent:

```
[Channel:#apache-metron]
tags: metron JIRA:METRON
jiraName: METRON
```

In order for this to function I think we'll also need `
asfbot@urd.zones.apache.org` to be a recipient of emails pertaining to
changes to the METRON JIRA tickets.

Finally, can we establish `cstella` as having Level 10 Karma in the
config? Thanks.

Agreed. I am sorry for dropping the ball here. I reopened the ticket and
made the request.

Re: [DISCUSS] Metron IRC channel

Posted by "Zeolla@GMail.com" <ze...@gmail.com>.
Perhaps we could think about adding what I wrote below this to the ticket
<https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/INFRA-12931>?  Please feel free to
double check it. Also, if someone is a moderator of the dev@metron list we
can send email to
dev-allow-subscribe-asfbot=urd.zones.apache.org@metron.apache.org to set up
the JIRA reporting, and remove the "In order..." part of the below message.

We discussed this on the mailing list and we'd like to add the ASFBot to

<https://wilderness.apache.org/manual.html#commits> enabled.  I believe
this would look something like this, for clarity of intent:

```
 jiraName: METRON
In order for this to function I think we'll also need `
asfbot@urd.zones.apache.org` to be a recipient of emails pertaining to
changes to the METRON JIRA tickets.
Finally, can we establish `cstella` as having Level 10 Karma in the
config?  Thanks.
Per the INFRA ticket, perhaps we should reopen and ask for what we
mentioned above?
Could an official member of the project fill an issue on ASF INFRA as
described on https://reference.apache.org/pmc/github to get the bot on
We tried using slack during the early days of the project and it was frowned upon by Apache.  So we abandoned it in favor of IRC and message lists.
the benefits this provides - just wanted to bring it up and see if anyone
else was thinking the same thing.  If not, no biggie.
