ok, [~shivaram] and i got together and whipped up a test build on our staging node w/R 3.1.1, and it looks like we're good!

[jenkins@amp-jenkins-staging-01 ~]# R --version | head -1
R version 3.1.1 (2014-07-10) -- "Sock it to Me"
i'll need to schedule some jenkins-wide downtime (before EOY) to remove all traces of the old R, and install 3.1.1 and recompile any additional packages.
