[Issue 126509] New: Copy/Paste toward other software increase the
line spacing
https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=126509
Issue ID: 126509
Issue Type: DEFECT
Summary: Copy/Paste toward other software increase the line
spacing
Product: Writer
Version: 4.1.1
Hardware: PC
OS: Windows 7
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P5
Component: save-export
Assignee: issues@openoffice.apache.org
Reporter: bluemate737@hotmail.com
While doing a copy of a text writen in Writer to another software (exemple
below) the line spacing in the pasted text is not conform to the original.
How to reproduce the bug:
1) Write several lignes of text in a new Writer document.
2) Select the text and copy it (ctrl+C)
3) Paste the text (ctrl+V) in another software in order to use your text there.
For instance try to paste it to Word 2007 or Thunderbird or Outlook 2007.
You will get your text but the line spacing is doubled. Here an exemple:
*******Result EXPECTED while doing copy/paste of the below text*******
Writer cannot do copy/paste properly
Writer cannot do copy/paste properly
Writer cannot do copy/paste properly
Writer cannot do copy/paste properly
*******Result RECEIVED while doing copy/paste of the ABOVE text*******
Writer cannot do copy/paste properly
Writer cannot do copy/paste properly
Writer cannot do copy/paste properly
Writer cannot do copy/paste properly
As you can see the pasted text get double spacing. Each line become a separate
paragraph, and paragraph become chapters. This make Writer unable to paste
properly any work done with it for instance to edit in an email a letter you
have written with Writer.
I've tried to check if other software can do it, and I have to confirm that
this issue is specific to Writer. See the following:
Copy from Microsoft Word to Outlook OK
Copy from Open Office Writer to Outlook NOT OK
Copy from Microsoft Word to Open Office Writer OK
Copy from Open Office Writer to Microsoft Word NOT OK
And the sadest... while speaking about OPEN software...
Copy from Microsoft Word to Thunderbird OK
Copy from Open Office Writer to Thunderbird NOT OK

The Formating of the text written in Writer may include BOLD, color, italic,
and so on. So you don't want to loose all the formatting by using the "Insert
without formatting" option.
What is usually expected by the user is to keep the exact formating, off
course.
This means avoiding to have extra spacing lines after each line or paragraph.
Other software keep the formating without adding extra spacing. Adding extra
unwanted spacing is definitelly not a feature but a bug.

Ok, thanks for the information.
This means when we use "incorrect" formating in Word, for instance using Enter
instead of Shift+Enter, Word show the corrected expected result (I mean result
expected by the mass of people using a computer not to write code but to write
letters) when doing a copy but Writer dont.
I'll need to correct all my work done with Word to be "coding right" then :-)

Maybe you confuse between 'end of paragraph' and 'end of line' characters.
We need the following information:
a) Attach a sample document with text at your step (1)
b) Provide screenshots of the problem if you think it might help

Could it be that the default paragraph style is different between the origin
and the destination, and there is no way to communicate such information as
part of the clip-board offer?
Since simply using Enter starts a new paragraph in both OpenOffice Writer and
in Office Word, the blank line could be a result of a space-before or
space-after setting being different between the two program and the documents
involved.
It is not clear how style information can be carried across between dissimilar
systems.
This has nothing to do with what are called hard line-breaks, achieved by
Shift-Enter practically everywhere. That starts a new line within the existing
paragraph, causing no before-after-spacing at all.

I've tested it under Ubuntu/Linux.
I can confirm the behaviour by using Thunderbird; but it is not a bug, it's a
feature. Yes!
AOO provide the ability to put the content into the clipboard also as HTML. (I
assume Word does it not.)
So Thunderbird grabs the paragraphs <p>...</p> and give them its own
formatting.
If you don't want this use Edit → Insert without Formatting. Other applications
will have similar insert options.

There is no extra line! There is a paragraph spacing dependent to the default
of the target application.
If you want right formatting then use right formatting. If you hit [Enter]
after each sentence you will get many separate paragraphs!
If you want a line break use [Shift]+[Enter]. see comment 1.
In Writer don't use the paragraph template Default; use Text Body instead. This
is the equivalent to this what you get as result in other applications.
If you want an other behaviour report the problem to the other applications
that they grab another format from the clipboard.
