Favicon.ico Question

I'm trying to get the favicon.ico option to work on some of my sites, but it seems that the only time I can get them to work is when I put in the REL LINK command that points to the location of the file. I was under the impression the broswer just looked for this file and loaded it. Is there anything I need to do on the server side to make this function work without having to put a REL LINK on every page.

Older versions of browsers used to ask for the icon if the user bookmarked
the page and would look for it in the directory containing the page.
This raised privacy concerns and most browsers now (Mozilla, IE, konqueror)
will always ask for the icon the first time they contact the website and
always at the root directory.
But if you still want to support older client behavior you can use the
Rewrite rule suggested below or simply:

Alias favicon.ico /wherever/favicon.ico

One way to do it would be to use mod_rewrite.

RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule .*favicon.ico /wherever/favicon.ico [PT]
