Mysql DataSource with Tomcat 4.1

I'm using a mysql jdbc datasource with TOmcat 4.1.  Two questions
1) Does TOmcat pool database connections?  If so where are the number of 
pooled connections specified?
2)  The server seems to hang after about 3 accesses to the database. 
 Has anyone experienced this?
