Also, I'm sure you're on top of this already, but this could do with a lot more commenting. Little things like what is meant by a "complex" field - with a bit of digging you can determine this is related to collections, but you have to jump to declaration quite a few times before establishing this. Simple descriptions of classes like "ComplexCellBlock" and what a class is used for, like in "CellWriter". 

It would really help to reduce the mystery that has surrounded some of the internal functionality. Right now I don't think anybody is fully conversant with even the current (post CASSANDRA-5417) functionality besides yourself. I know this rewrite will help a lot, but I doubt it will fix the problem entirely. There's a lot of legacy cruft to deal with still, that makes things complicated, and this rewrite will put almost everyone back to square one.
