1.7.0-beta3 up for signing / testing

All,

The next prerelease from the 1.7.x branch is now up for testing and
signing: 1.7.0-beta3. The magic revision is r1154051 (but a known bug
in the release scripts doesn't include that rev in the header file).
You can find the tarballs here:
http://people.apache.org/~hwright/svn/1.7.0-beta3/

This is still a beta release, but is expected to be the last one.
Stability continues to improve, but as you may expect, these
prereleases are intended for intrepid users and testers only. We're
cutting this now, to allow folks to test and sign over the weekend, if
they'd like. To release, we need a complete set of 3 *nix and 3
Windows signatures.

Please send sigs here:
http://work.hyrumwright.org/pub/svn/collect_sigs.py

Thanks,
-Hyrum

PS - The revision-number-in-header file issue is expected to be fixed
for the release candidates.

I had to tweak the ctypes-python tests to get them to run properly. The
pool that the repo's opened in needs to be cleared between tests, to
ensure the rep-cache DB is closed and re-opened when the repo is deleted
and re-created at the same path. Without that, most of the tests failed
to initialize, saying "E160004: Youngest revision is r1, but rep-cache
contains r2".

It turns out the Noorul had posted a patch that fixes that problem
<http://svn.haxx.se/dev/archive-2011-02/0702.shtml>, but the email
didn't say what it was fixing and nobody replied. I'll commit a fix for
this shortly, along the same lines but calling the new methods 'close'
instead of 'clear_pool'.

I just added my signatures to you script. (Probably when you were writing this mail).

I can't say I think beta 3 is release quality yet (see the long list in 1.7.x/STATUS), but it is certainly better than the older betas which I did sign.

I quite agree. That comment was made somewhat in frustration with the
(apparent) lack of progress on the beta.

Process exists for a reason, and we should always be careful when
circumventing it. However, we should also be careful we don't just
follow process for process' sake.

Hi Hyrum,

My initial thought is;
"To favour results over process" is the wrong move.
Processes are sometimes in place to save us from ourselves.

Gavin.

So, the only thing holding up this release is the lack of a Windows
sig. While I don't like that situation, at this point I think it's
foolishness to allow process to get in the way of progress in the
release, so I'm tempted to move forward with the signatures we have.

Thoughts?
