Releasing 2.2?

So Geronimo 1.2 is coming up and we're going to need to crank out a
2.2 release for them as usual.

From an Incubator perspective we should now be clear with our IP.
We've also moved all our code from org.openejb to
org.apache.openejb. Also all other license headers have been removed
from the source and replaces with the current ASL header. We're
still going to need some help to make sure our jars have the required
LICENSE.txt and NOTICE files. We also need to make sure all the
files that need the ASL header have them -- some things never had
license headers on them.

Can I get a show of hands of people who'd like to help with that?
I'm not sure of the mechanics but I saw Kevan was using some neat
tool to do the same for Geronimo.

From a technical perspective, what things are we waiting on?

Still working on getting the interop tck passing with yoko. So far,
most of the fixes have been in the openejb corba classes. There's
probably at least 2 weeks of work left to get everything working.

Geez, you're fast! Took me longer to create the jiras!

Yea, those should be yanked.

Those can be skipped -- too small to be copyrightable.

Is there a committer out there that can get Jay's patch in?

I have gone through and added apache license headers to just about every
file (I think).

I also created a JIRA (openejb-321) and attached the patch file.

There were a couple of files that I didn't know what to do with:

(should these log files be here at all?)
./modules/openejb-corba-builder/scout.log
./modules/openejb-corba/scout.log
./modules/openejb-core/scout.log
./modules/openejb-yoko/scout.log
./modules/openejb-builder/scout.log
./modules/openejb-sunorb/scout.log

(I wasn't sure what type of commenting to use for these)
./modules/openejb-core/src/test/resources/login.config
./modules/openejb-core/target/test-classes/login.config

Fantastic!

Exactly.

Ok, I've arbitrarily divided the work into the following set of Jiras:

   [OPENEJB-311] Add ASL License Headers
     [OPENEJB-312] ASL Headers: openejb2/itests
     [OPENEJB-313] ASL Headers: openejb2/modules/openejb-builder
     [OPENEJB-314] ASL Headers: openejb2/modules/openejb-corba
     [OPENEJB-315] ASL Headers: openejb2/modules/openejb-core
     [OPENEJB-316] ASL Headers: openejb3/assembly
     [OPENEJB-317] ASL Headers: openejb3/container
     [OPENEJB-318] ASL Headers: openejb3/examples
     [OPENEJB-319] ASL Headers: openejb3/itests
     [OPENEJB-320] ASL Headers: openejb3/server

I'd like to help.

What needs to be done with these files?

Just copy in the license header?

I'll start as soon as I know what to do.

There are compliance problems with the corba integration and there is
a bug in the geronimo-connector code that may require changes in
OpenEJB.

Other than that, I think we are technically ready to ship.

Nope. OpenEJB2 doesn't have a binary distribution; it's a Geronimo
only version. We simply build the jars and post them to the maven
repository.

Getting the disclaimer into the jar files is the only issue that I see.

Will the build create a binary distribution? Or do you pull the jar
files together manually?

I went ahead and updated everything in 2.2/2.3/3.0. Added the
DISCLAIMER, updated the NOTICE files. There were two files that
didn't have the ASL header (openejb-jar.xml and ejb-jar.xml). They

I scrapped all our jars with rat too and they all looked good.

We should be ready to go. Anyone see anything outstanding?

I just changed the default prefetch behavior in TranQL and this
addresses Matt's concerns. I believe that we should cut a TranQL
version now. If the TCK is broken due to this last minute change,
then I think we should re-cut a TranQL release based on the previous
SVN revision.

That last "possibly TranQL" fix turned out to be an OpenEJB fix, so
it sounds iffy. Gianny any thoughts?

Alright, we have a build for Yoko and Matt just published a new new

I've got everything building fine now with final versions, etc. so
I'll tag and post binaries shortly.

That'd give us just one last snapshot, yoko. Rick, is it possible
that you could cook up a svn-revisioned yoko build that we could use

DayTrader checks out in Direct, SLSB and EJB mode thanks to Gianny.
We have to verify JPA mode but its most likely configuration.

I've released:

TranQL-Parent 1.0
TranQL-Connector 1.3
TranQL-Connector-Derby-* 1.2

I'm waiting on tranql itself as gianny was going to take a look at
prefetch. David, we could probably branch tranql also and provide
1.4.1 in Geronimo if you need that.

Thoughts?

Great. Thanks.

We're good here as you only need/should have 3rd part license files
for libraries you redistribute -- not what you depend on. I double
checked with Henri our mentor to make sure.

> Release notes/readme files need to be created. These should mention
> that openejb is in incubator.

Created release notes:
http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/openejb/branches/v2_2/
openejb2/RELEASE-NOTES-2.2.txt

We don't need a readme file though as there is nothing to "try" or
any zips/tars to put it in. Same goes for the release notes
technically, but I know Geronimo will want them so I went ahead and
created those.

> I have not run RAT against a binary distribution. So, there may be

Maybe you can just run it against some of the files in your maven2
repo or the OpenEJB section of a Geronimo 1.2 repo.

> see coming up in the very-near future:
>
> 2.2-m1 (corresponds to Geronimo 1.2 beta)

We don't/can't certify so there is no need to put the "milestone" or
beta prefix on the releases. If we're lucky we could do:

2.2 (Geronimo 1.2 beta1)
2.3 (Geronimo 1.2 final and Geronimo 2.0 M1) <-- this is the part
where we could be lucky

There is no code difference between 2.2 and 2.3, the only difference
is the version of the geronimo dependencies listed in the poms which
Geronimo should be able to exclude when it references OpenEJB in
configs/assembly. I think that kind of hints at some of the items
you were talking about.

Thoughts from anyone?

Hi David,
I started looking at branches/v2_2/openejb2 last night.

There were a few files missing license headers. All of the NOTICE
files did not meet current Apache requirements, and there was no
DISCLAIMER file. I can commit these changes soon to branches/2_2 and
trunk/openejb2, soon.

There's a bit of work needed to identify any 3rd party license/notice
information that needs to be included in the OpenEJB license/notice
files.

Release notes/readme files need to be created. These should mention
that openejb is in incubator.

I have not run RAT against a binary distribution. So, there may be
some additional issues...

To make sure we're all thinking alike, here are the releases that I
see coming up in the very-near future:

2.2-m1 (corresponds to Geronimo 1.2 beta)
2.3-m1 (corresponds to Geronimo 2.0 M1)

I'm not aware of any technical problems which would prevent a release
of the above.

As soon as G 1.2 and OEJB 2.2 are passing TCK, there would be a 2.2
release. Agreed?

2.3 is kind of a dead-end version. I don't think we really see it
being a full release. Is there someway that 2.2-m1 could be shared
between the two Geronimo beta/milestone releases?

Later on, I assume we'll be generating a 3.0-m1. But that's a future
discussion...

It looks like the time for release is at hand as Geronimo is on the
cusp of 1.2 beta.

From an Incubator status we cleared up what was posted by Kevan and
me. Anyone want to double check that we are good to go in that area?

From a technical perspective when are we good to ship? Could we cut
today, tomorrow, next week? Any outstanding technical items we'd
need to get done for Geronimo's 1.2 beta?

OEJB2.2 files, as I am currently working on OEJB3.0, if u have problems with
that we will stick to our first deal and after we finish we go through the
files of OEJB3.0 the same we treated OEJB2.2 files, thoughts ???

Good idea. Results below.

FYI, the tool can be found here -- http://code.google.com/p/arat/

I ran as follows:

   svn export https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/openejb/
trunk/openejb2 openejb2
   cd openejb2
   java -jar ~/tmp/arat/rat/rat-0.2-SNAPSHOT.jar . > openejb2-rat.out

There's a fair amount of intormation in that file. However, I used
the following to generate the list below:

   grep ==[a-z,A-Z] openejb2-rat.out

Here's the list of files:

Hey Kevan, could you run your tool-thingy on OpenEJB 2 trunk and post
a list of files that Mohammad and others could help get into shape?
