formatter values for cr/lf

I'm getting a message from Cocoon (1.7.4) stating an element type must be
terminated by the matching end-tag.  I know the end-tag is in the XML.  I
believe the problem is caused by a cr/lf in the element data.  Is there some
formatter setting to process the cr/lf differently?
