unable to retrieve RPM-snapshots

We are deploying rpm-files (releases) to Archiva.
Unfortunately Archiva always reports "Unable to find project model for ...".
The metadata seems correct, except that there is no packaging info.
Might this be the cause?
Is there anything special to consider when deploying rpm's ?
Btw, deploying tar's did not bring any issues.
