sparse checkout

When I do a checkout with --depth immediates it seems to take just as
long as if I checked out everything.
Is there a way to speed this up ?

Upgrade the server to at least Subversion 1.5.0.

Is the server 1.5? If not, it will not be as fast. See the release
notes:
