XUpdate error Help please

I'm trying to update an element by adding a time stamp:

StringBuffer buffr = new StringBuffer();
buffr.append( "<xu:modifications version=\"1.0\"
xmlns:xu=\"http://www.xmldb.org/xupdate\">" );
buffr.append( "<xupdate:element
select=\"/ServicesProperties/SystemProperties/TimeStamps/Start\">" );
buffr.append( "17 December 2002 - 12:16:11" );
buffr.append( "</xupdate:element>" );



Error I get:
org.xmldb.api.base.XMLDBException: Query Compilation Error


My partial xml doc
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<ServicesProperties type="smtp" name="generic">
   <SystemProperties status="finished">
   	<TimeStamps>
		<Start/>
		<Stop/>
	</TimeStamps>
   </SystemProperties>

..
..
</ServicesProperties>
