[D] Ability to change drop down menu permission for Charts [superset]

GitHub user sanromeo created a discussion: Ability to change drop down menu permission for Charts

Some of the actions are not needed for specific users, such as Edit chart, View query, Share. How can I disable it for users?

What if I have:
```
    "Chart"                       = ["can_read"]
    "Dashboard"                   = ["can_read"]
```

If your role only grants `can_read` on `Chart` and `Dashboard`, you're already in good shape—most of the actions you mentioned won't appear. Here's what happens with that minimal permission set:

**Will still show (always rendered regardless of permissions):**

- Force Refresh
- Fullscreen toggle

[[1]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset-frontend/src/dashboard/components/SliceHeaderControls/index.tsx#L340-L351)

**Will NOT show (require additional permissions you haven't granted):**

| Action | Required Permission |
|---|---|
| Edit chart | `can_explore` on `Superset` [[2]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset-frontend/src/dashboard/components/SliceHeaderControls/index.tsx#L363-L372) |
| View query | `can_explore` OR `can_view_query` on `Dashboard` [[3]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset-frontend/src/dashboard/components/SliceHeaderControls/index.tsx#L382-L396) |
| View as table | `can_explore` OR `can_view_chart_as_table` on `Dashboard` [[4]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset-frontend/src/dashboard/components/SliceHeaderControls/index.tsx#L398-L420) |
| Share | `can_share_chart` [[5]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset-frontend/src/dashboard/components/SliceHeaderControls/index.tsx#L434-L446) |
| Download/Export | CSV export permission [[6]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset-frontend/src/dashboard/components/SliceHeaderControls/index.tsx#L448-L497) |
| Drill to Detail | `can_explore` or `can_drill` + datasource samples perm [[7]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset-frontend/src/dashboard/components/SliceHeaderControls/index.tsx#L422-L430) |

So with only `can_read` on Chart and Dashboard, the dropdown menu should be minimal (just Force Refresh and Fullscreen). If you're still seeing items like "Edit chart", "View query", or "Share", it likely means the user's role (or another role assigned to them, like Gamma) includes additional permissions such as `can_explore` or `can_share_chart` that you'd need to remove.

<!-- Answer -->
That's unexpected for "Edit chart" — the code shows it's gated **exclusively** by `can_explore` on `Superset` [[1]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset-frontend/src/dashboard/components/SliceHeaderControls/index.tsx#L363-L372) [[2]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset-frontend/src/dashboard/actions/hydrate.js#L264-L268). A few things to check:

**1. The user may have multiple roles.**
If the user has another role (e.g., Alpha, Admin, or any custom role) that still includes `can_explore` on `Superset`, that would override your removal. Check **all** roles assigned to the user in Settings → List Users.

**2. For "View query" specifically** — it uses OR logic: it shows if the user has `can_explore` on `Superset` **OR** `can_view_query` on `Dashboard` [[3]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset-frontend/src/dashboard/components/SliceHeaderControls/index.tsx#L382). So even after removing `can_explore`, you'd also need to remove `can_view_query` on `Dashboard` to hide it.

**3. Browser/session caching.** Permissions are computed at dashboard load time and stored in Redux state [[4]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset-frontend/src/dashboard/components/gridComponents/Chart.jsx#L138-L140). Try having the user:

- Log out and log back in
- Hard-refresh the dashboard (Ctrl+Shift+R)
- Clear browser cache

**4. Verify the permission was actually removed.** In Settings → List Roles, open the role and confirm that `[can_explore, Superset]` no longer appears in the permission list.

If after checking all of the above "Edit chart" still appears, could you share which roles are assigned to that user? That would help narrow down what's granting the access.

This confirms the root cause — the frontend and backend check **different permissions** for this feature:

| Layer | Permission checked | Resource |
|-------|---|---|
| **Backend** (blocks API access) | `can_read` | `Explore` |
| **Frontend** (shows/hides menu button) | `can_explore` | `Superset` |

[[1]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset-frontend/src/dashboard/actions/hydrate.js#L264-L268) [[2]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset/views/explore.py#L27-L49)

These are two separate entries in the role. You removed `can_read` on `Explore`, which blocks the backend ✓ — but the frontend still sees `can_explore` on `Superset` in the user's role and renders the button [[3]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset-frontend/src/dashboard/components/SliceHeaderControls/index.tsx#L363-L372).

**To hide the button from the menu**, you also need to remove `can_explore` on `Superset` from the user's role. Check your role's permission list for that specific entry — it's a separate permission from the one you already removed.

Once both are removed:

- `can_read` on `Explore` removed → backend blocks access
- `can_explore` on `Superset` removed → frontend hides the "Edit chart" button

This is admittedly a design gap where the frontend and backend aren't using the same permission to control the same feature.

<!-- Answer -->
Hi @sanromeo! I'm [Dosu](https://go.dosu.dev/dosubot) and I'm helping the Apache Superset team.

Superset doesn't offer a single toggle to hide individual chart dropdown actions per role, but you can restrict visibility through a combination of **role-based permissions** and **feature flags**:

**1. Role-based permissions (most relevant for your case)**

Specific permissions control whether certain menu items appear [[1]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset/security/manager.py#L1040-L1047):

| Permission | Controls |
|---|---|
| `can_explore` | "Edit chart" link (users without this won't see it) |
| `can_view_query` | "View query" option |
| `can_share_chart` | Share submenu items |

You can create a custom role (or modify the Gamma role) in **Settings → List Roles** and remove these permissions. The menu items are conditionally rendered at runtime—if the user's role lacks the permission, the item won't appear [[2]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset-frontend/src/explore/components/useExploreAdditionalActionsMenu/index.jsx#L419-L432).

**2. Feature flags (global, affects all users)**

Some actions are gated behind feature flags in `superset_config.py` [[3]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset/config.py#L466-L582):

```python
FEATURE_FLAGS = {
    "EMBEDDABLE_CHARTS": False,  # hides "Embed code" share option
    "DRILL_TO_DETAIL": False,    # hides drill-to-detail
    "DRILL_BY": False,           # hides drill-by
}
```

**3. Dynamic feature flags (per-role logic)**

For more nuanced control, you can use `GET_FEATURE_FLAGS_FUNC` to evaluate feature flags dynamically based on the current user's role [[4]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset/config.py#L629-L645):

```python
from superset import security_manager
def custom_feature_flag_func(feature_flag_key: str) -> bool:
    user = security_manager.current_user
    # Custom logic per role
    ...
GET_FEATURE_FLAGS_FUNC = custom_feature_flag_func
```

**Limitations**: There's currently no built-in way to disable *every* individual action item granularly per role without some custom work. A [related discussion](https://github.com/apache/superset/discussions/32806#discussioncomment-17473008) and [PR #27029](https://github.com/apache/superset/pull/27029) introduced more granular dashboard action permissions, and there's ongoing interest in a hierarchical action model—but it hasn't landed as a full feature yet [[5]](https://github.com/apache/superset/discussions/32806#discussioncomment-17473008).

For anything not covered by the existing permissions, you'd need to extend the security manager or customize the frontend components.

@dosu

What if I have:

    "Chart"                       = ["can_read"]
    "Dashboard"                   = ["can_read"]

This is a known discrepancy in Superset's architecture. The frontend and backend use **different levels of permission checking**:

- **Frontend menu visibility** is based on the **general role-level** `can_explore` permission on `Superset`, computed once at dashboard load time [[1]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset-frontend/src/dashboard/actions/hydrate.js#L264-L268).
- **Backend access enforcement** checks **datasource-specific** permissions (schema access, datasource permission, ownership) via `security_manager.raise_for_access()` [[2]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset/explore/api.py#L47-L55).

So if your user's role still has `can_explore` on `Superset` (even if the backend blocks due to datasource-level restrictions), the menu items will still render. The frontend does not make real-time permission checks per chart—it just looks at the general role permission [[3]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset-frontend/src/dashboard/components/SliceHeaderControls/index.tsx#L363-L372).

**If you truly removed `can_explore` from ALL roles assigned to the user** and the menu still shows, there are two likely explanations:

1. **Cached permissions** — The `findPermission` utility uses `memoizeOne` [[4]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset-frontend/src/utils/findPermission.ts#L22-L27). A full logout + login (or clearing session cookies) is needed for changes to take effect.

2. **`can_view_query` on `Dashboard`** — "View Query" has its own separate permission check via the `usePermissions()` hook [[5]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset-frontend/src/dashboard/components/SliceHeaderControls/index.tsx#L382-L396). Even without `can_explore`, if the role has `can_view_query` on `Dashboard`, that item will still appear.

**Bottom line**: This is a UI gap — the frontend doesn't hide menu items based on datasource-level restrictions, only based on general role permissions. There are [related reports](https://github.com/apache/superset/issues/36500) of this same pattern [[6]](https://github.com/apache/superset/issues/36500#issuecomment-3640164553). Unfortunately, there's no built-in config to fix this without either:

- Ensuring the role truly lacks `can_explore` on `Superset` AND `can_view_query` on `Dashboard`
- Customizing the frontend components to add datasource-level permission checks before rendering menu items

Removing: "Explore" = ["can_read"] blocks access to Edit chart, but I still see this button in three dots menu on dashboard when click on specific chart menu

Glad you found it! That confirms it was the second role granting `can_explore` on `Superset` that kept the menu items visible. Since the frontend checks across **all** roles assigned to a user [[1]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset-frontend/src/utils/findPermission.ts#L22-L27), any single role with that permission is enough to show the buttons.

To summarize for anyone else who lands here — to fully hide "Edit chart" and "View query" from the dashboard chart menu, make sure **none** of the user's assigned roles have:

- `can_explore` on `Superset` → hides both "Edit chart" and "View query"
- `can_view_query` on `Dashboard` → hides "View query" (has its own separate check)

And optionally remove `can_read` on `Explore` to block backend access as well.
