bottom line: a lot of the code in TVC is a relic of the old TV APIs in lucene, and is no longer needed -- the component could be changed to use a ReturnFields instance on the tv.fl param; ask the IndexReader for all Term vectors for the document; ignore any field that doesn't have true=ReturnFields.wantField; check the per field override options for each field as it loops.
