I believe Kotlin would not kick off more than Groovy if it were not for
Android not fully supporting java8 language features for a long time, and
Google endorsing Kotlin officially. That's the area where Kotlin grew it's
most significant base of followers. It's not strictly a matter of language
superiority.

That being said, the easily confusing mix of dynamic and static compilation
and the "magic" DSL sins committed by Gradle and Geb do not help make
Groovy popular with the mainstream. Though at the same time those features
might keep Groovy alive in the wild.
