[Patch] for ALL compilations
Rather than Jeff's update (simplicity's sake, right???)
1) attached is a patch to MAKEFILE.NT for both NT & 95.
2) Kill both makefile_win32.txt and makefile_win32_debug.txt
3) [optional] rename MAKEFILE.NT to MAKEFILE.WIN or .W32 or .win32
This file wasn't affected by the [patch] NT Build (mak/dsp) update,
so it won't make the job of committing both any more troublesome (hint
hint).

This is true, which is why we need nmake's variables rather than environment
strings... they will work on BOTH platforms.
RE: [Patch] another attempt at one makefile for all Win32 compilations

+1 to that - much cleaner.
More mea culpas - and it wasn't indentation. (Tried to set VALUE=X with a
leading tab? Doesn't work.) I forgot that we needed an !IFDEF block since
marco assignment is otherwise global, but we never define something worth
testing. If it's worth anything, we can always use the following to achieve
a single param:
!IF "$(LONG)" == "Debug"
SHORT=D
!ELSE IF "$(LONG)" == "Release"
SHORT=R
!ELSE IF "$(SHORT)" == "D"
LONG=Debug
!ELSE IF "$(SHORT)" == "R"
LONG=Release
!ELSE
# These tags go here alone, since they aren't explicit build targets.
# Actions for each target were eliminated for simplicity of the example.
default:
_apacher:
_apached:
installr:
installd:
_cleanr:
_cleand:
installdll:
!ENDIF
but we did need at least one arg (not simply a target) off the bat. I also
searched for the /f param (make-file name, to use as $() arg) but didn't
find any reference to it. Not being picky, did you notice
+ nmake /nologo CFG="htpasswd - Win32 $(LONG)" -f htpasswd.mak clean
+ nmake /nologo CFG="htdigest - Win32 $(LONG)" -f htdigest.mak clean
cleans commented out targets? Might want to # them out.
It builds fine on NT (even tested the INSTDIR= arg).

[Patch] another attempt at one makefile for all Win32 compilations
Posted by Jeff Trawick <tr...@bellsouth.net>.
This has the same user interface as the old Makefile.nt (i.e., specify the
same targets as before and magic will happen).
Can someone try this on NT/Win2K and/or with VC++ 6.0? It works fine
for me with Win98 SE + VC++ 5.0.
Still to do...
. rename to Makefile.win32 or similar
. get rid of the Win9x-specific makefiles
. document how to build on Win9x/NT/Win2K
. get the several things that won't build on Win32 to build and maybe
even work :)

Re: [Patch] for ALL compilations

It looks much nicer, but I can only build the debug version
with it. I think that the section quoted below, the assignment of
SHORT and LONG is not associated with the target (_release
or _debug) because there is no indention.
_release:
SHORT=R
LONG=Release
_debug:
SHORT=D
LONG=Debug
So once you pass this section, SHORT and LONG are always set to the
values for a debug build. I have VC++ 5.0. I don't know if it
differs based on which nmake is used. Is it happening this way on
your system as well? If so, some var can be set externally (e.g.,
nmake /f Makefile.nt DEBUG=1) with conditional logic internally to set
SHORT and LONG to the right values based on whether or not the
external variable is set.
As an aside... in Makefile.nt, the clean invocation for ap.mak
cd ap
nmake /nologo CFG="ap - Win32 $(LONG)" -f ap.mak clean
cd ..
should be uncommented.

Hate to add traffic for mea culpas - but that subject was rather pigheaded,
