"Solar Power" earlier this month, appeared on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" Monday to share details about her upcoming album (out Aug. 20) as well as her 2022 world tour. Lorde has allegedly become basic. The New Zealand songwriter’s smash 2013 debut, Pure Heroine, issued a mascara-dolloped eye roll at “white teeth teens” who party to radio songs about Grey Goose instead of, say, cuddling to Broken Social Scene. But now, as a 24-year-old, Lorde is not out to prove herself ornery and special. Her June single, “Solar Power,” imitated the hits of George Michael and Sheryl Crow to endorse going to the beach. Its lyrics seemed apt for decorative rocks and plates with images of lobsters. Many fans expressed confusion at such peppiness. Some used the B-word. Eight years ago, Lorde was a precocious teen with an anti-materialist anthem (“Royals”) that, ironically, made her pop royalty. Now, she’s trying to take things down a notch. Solar Power the album will be released on August 20 and features 12 tracks, all with titles that complement the happy, laid-back vibe of the first single: "California," "Mood Ring," and "Oceanic Feeling," for example. The musician has clearly found peace and inspiration from nature, notably the beach, and that earthy, spiritual feeling will likely flow through most of Solar Power. “The album is a celebration of the natural world, an attempt at immortalizing the deep, transcendent feelings I have when I’m outdoors," Lorde said in a letter to fans. "In times of heartache, grief, deep love, or confusion, I look to the natural world for answers. I’ve learned to breathe out, and tune in. Instead, Lorde will give fans the option to purchase an eco-friendly "music box" if they desire something physical in addition to the streamable album; it'll come with handwritten notes, exclusive photographs, and a download card. She says she approached Lorde with two different plans for arenas, but the artist said “it’s not what she wants to do with this record. She’s been very insistent. Back in November 2020, Lorde told fans in an email, "The beginning of summer is my favorite time in New Zealand, and this year in particular it feels like a gift."
