RE: Contributing Organizations

I see 3 proponents and 0 opponents of this idea. Can we put it to a vote?

Subject: Contributing Organizations

All-

Many other projects list the organizations where their developers / contributors are from.
See, for example:

http://zookeeper.apache.org/credits.html
http://hadoop.apache.org/who.html
http://gora.apache.org/credits.html

We can, and probably should, do the same, if this is agreeable to a sufficient number of us. (If we do this, it should probably be understood that it is a voluntary extra column on our page, and that it is the responsibility of committers to add themselves.)

For reference, our current credits page looks like this:
http://accumulo.apache.org/people.html

Sounds good. I might switch all the current -5s to ET to establish a
precedent, but people can feel free to change it to whatever they want.
Actually I'd like to use something fancier like a web service where you
specify your region and it tells you the current time (
http://tycho.usno.navy.mil/simpletime.html) but it's probably not worth
spending time on. :-)

Let people put whatever they like in that field. If I set a bad
precedent, forgive me :) If you set a better precedent with what you
put there, I suspect people might follow. If you update yourself w/
something more reasonable for east coast + daylight savings time, then
update me too.

Let's revisit this timezone thing. 1) Is anyone not in EST? 2) If we
write -5, it will be wrong during daylight savings time. I doubt anyone
will remember to switch them all twice a year. So, if we must put them,
I'd be in favor of using the "ET" abbreviation. Or we could just note at
the top that everyone is -5 / -4 / ET unless otherwise specified.

I closed the ticket I opened to do this, as I hadn't realized that it had
already been started.

Since JIRA no longer has a contributor report, there is no other way to see
the contributors unless you have administrative access to our JIRA.

I'm ok with having two tables, one for committers and one for contributors.

Re: Contributing Organizations

Posted by Christopher <ct...@apache.org>.
Cold weather illnesses and holidays being what they are, I apologize for my
lack of attention to this issue.

I agree with Billie, that we don't really need a vote for voluntary
information. I've also been somewhat reluctant to take action on this
issue, due to the fact that I dislike doing web design, and I fear if I
were the one to implement this, I would end up lowering the quality of our
front-facing web interfaces. If somebody wants to volunteer a better page
design, with the included information, I'd welcome it as a patch
for ACCUMULO-946 (link https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/ACCUMULO-946),
or if you are a committer, you can resolve it yourself.

Since no one has voiced any objections to this, and listing one's
organization will be voluntary, I don't see a need for a vote on this
issue. If anyone disagrees, feel free to speak up.

If there are any contributors who would like their organization listed on
this page (http://accumulo.apache.org/people.html), email me or another
committer and we'll add it for you.
