spamd CPU load

hi all...

i recently installed SA 2.63 on a new redhat 9 box. it works fine but
sometimes the machine dies unexpectedly without leaving anything in the
logs.

i suspect spamd. although i don't see spamd in the maillog at the time the
machine goes down looking constantly at the top output i see sometimes
spamd 99% CPU load?! by root. this is weired (to me) because i see spamd
processes triggered by individual users that are 6 - 15 % of CPU load at a
time. root doesn't have .spamassassin directory so i don't see why it'd
shoot up to 99%.
the MTA is qmail and i'm using maildir to deliver the mail to Maildir.

is there any reasonable explanation for that 99% CPU load by spamd?

thanks....

Just that when we upgrade to the new kernel almost everything on our
servers worked better.
