RC3 status

Hey, so going through the RC3 thread I have the following votes

Chris Douglas + 1
Kevan Miller - 1
Jun Rao + 1
Jakob Homan + 1

I have googled a few times trying to piece together who is on the IPMC and
who is on our PPMC (explicitly and without deriving it from threads). Do
we need a quorum from both? do we have it? did I miss someone?

My take on the thread is that the release is as sound as 0.7.0 but we have
some things we can improve on of which I think came down to having some
file that can call out transitive dependencies... now I don't want to get
into that all here on this thread, I will open a JIRA for that.

So for now, any assistance to where we are with this and if we are passed
vote what I do next would be great help thanks.

Sorry for the ignorance in regards to the process but I have always found
it more ignorant to not ask when you don't know something =8^)

IIUC, this is generating new artifacts that were not voted upon. I think this is the bit that I always get wrong but we should still double check.

Outstanding!

BTW, I think we need to put the old kafka-0.7.0-incubating there as well. Please make sure it was the distribution we voted upon. Thanks!

Alan

Joe,

The dist link still doesn't work. Could you open an infrastructure ticket
to see what else is needed? As for website, since this release has api
changes, please open a jira for updating the docs.

Alan, that makes sense.

Let me suggest we do a 0.7.2 release later in July. I will volunteer to
manage that release also.

I would suggest having https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/KAFKA-134 in
the release ( a lot of people , including myself, would like to see the
latest SBT and a clean 2.9.1 build ) at a minimum along with anything else
that we put into trunk by the time we cut 0.7.2 along with making sure we
have a binary release along with the source release. We will have to (I
will open a JIRA for this too) make sure we document the dependencies that
are transitive that are going to show up in that binary distribution (which
will be like 50MB) . I would be happy to take that on also but will have
some questions will move that convo to the ticket once created.

As I mentioned in the other email, I think that the artifacts needed to be voted upon along w/ the source. That's what's usually done. My understanding is that there would be a record that jars with specific signatures and hashes were vetted and voted upon.

I copied the files to

joestein@minotaur:~$ ls -l /www/www.apache.org/dist/incubator/kafka/*
-rw-r--r-- 1 joestein incubator 14218 Jun 25 14:19 /www/
www.apache.org/dist/incubator/kafka/KEYS

/www/www.apache.org/dist/incubator/kafka/kafka-0.7.1-incubating:
total 1807
-rw-r--r-- 1 joestein incubator 7146 Jun 25 14:18 RELEASE-NOTES.html
-rw-r--r-- 1 joestein incubator 1783376 Jun 25 14:18

-rw-r--r-- 1 joestein incubator 81 Jun 25 14:18
kafka-0.7.1-incubating-src.tgz.md5

however they are not showing up yet
http://www.apache.org/dist/incubator/maybe some delay or requires some
other approvals? or I did something wrong
or missed a step?

I looked into the Maven Repositories (read through our existing JIRA on it
which seem to be a Sonays issues)

Any reason to not use Apache's Maven Repo?
http://www.apache.org/dev/publishing-maven-artifacts.html ? I will open a
infrastructure ticket on this later today and see about getting this
through the next set of flaming rings.

It looks like the site pages are here
http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/kafka/site/ should I (once we get
links for downloads... or i could just use my ~joestein apache for now if
we wanted too and update as we make progress on other fronts so we can
announce and get it out there) create a JIRA and make a patch for the
change or just commit what is a simple update or what, don't know the
protocol for site changes

thanks

Not sure if this was in reference to 0.7.1 or 0.7.2, but wouldn't a jar
be a "binary" release? To the extend that is agreed to be a meaningful
distinction?

Re: RC3 status

Joe,

It will be good to make the release available in the Kafka directory
at /www/www.apache.org/dist -
http://incubator.apache.org/guides/releasemanagement.html#understanding-distribution

Also, a lot of users have asked the release jar to be available
through Maven. It will be great to have that.

Thanks,
Neha

Re: RC3 status

Posted by Jun Rao <ju...@gmail.com>.
Joe,

According to
https://incubator.apache.org/guides/releasemanagement.html#glossary-release-manager
:

for votes on kafka-dev, it requires at least 3 +1's from the PPMC/IPMC
members and more +1's than -1's
for votes on general@incubator, it requires majority consensus has been
achieved with respect to IPMC votes

Given the following votes, I think our release has passed.

Chris Douglas (PPMC/IPMC) + 1
Kevan Miller (IPMC)- 1
Jun Rao (PPMC) + 1
Jakob Homan (PPMC/IPMC) + 1

Please tally the votes and inform general@incubator and kafka-dev.

The next step is to change the website with the new download links and the
docs (which we can help you with).

Since Neha did the last release, she can tell you other things that I may
forget.

Thanks,

Jun
