db configuration issues

I installed tarballs for the db-4.2.52 and db-4.1.25 for Subversion.
How do I find out which version will be utilized with my Subversion
repositories? What configurations are needed to implement just one
version of the database?  (Because my Subversion system was installed
using RPMs, it wasn't necessary for me to run the configure
--with-berkeley-db=......)
