The feature request is about Calc. In Calc no kind of shape can be
"inside" a cell, because anchor "as character" is not possible. There is
no alignment available for shapes. Compare the position&size dialog in
Writer and Calc.

Kind regards

Surely it's not that difficult. There are icons that allow you to align things left, right or
centred, and you can set margins within cells, I think. Certainly when I see things wrong in
a column, it's a matter of seconds to highlight it and hit the relevant icon.

If "wrap as character" existed in Calc and worked the same way as Writer
in Calc, the entity that you demonstrated would be treated as a very
long character. Text can be set to be centered or left-aligned
certainly that seems like the best approach to take to get to what
Dwayne Henderson wants.

Every cell is a little canvas where you type in values, and the values
do not wrap to the next cell or the next line as in a text editor or in
Writer.

If Regina Henschel seems to understand the issues involved quite well
and if she is a programmer, it looks like Dwayne has already found
someone competent in this task.

Dwayne if you are reading this, I am a developer as well. Not in OOO
but in other projects. You could make me an offer privately, if you wish.

I mean that manual positioning for form elements is useful in Writer, but
unnecessary in Calc. In Calc, positioning should be automatic. Or at least
this should be an option.

Manual positioning in Writer documents make sense as each page is a canvas
- meant to resemble a physical piece of paper. Form elements will most
certainly need their own unique position as all form elements cannot all be
centered, one on top of the other, on the page.

In Calc, however, the design methodology is different. I'm not sure if the
concept of a cell has any equivalent in real life (bunch of small Post-it
notes maybe?), but here each cell becomes a canvas. Here it makes more
sense to automatically center each form element within each cell. Who puts
form elements on top of multiple cells, or multiple form elements inside
one cell anyway?

Thanks for listening!

I'm not sure what you mean. In Calc there is only one drawing layer
"Controls" for all controls.
That is the same as in Writer.

Regina,

It's cool you want maximum consistency - the same stuff for Writer as for
Calc.

I think the two cases are a little bit different though. In Writer, the
whole page is the canvas, whereas in Calc each cell is a canvas, if you
know what I mean.

Personally I'm just seeking a way to automatically position form elements
within their cells, so I don't have to manually position things using all
sorts of ugly numbers.

There is snapping, yes, but to what? An invisible grid that is totally
different from the border grid? That makes no sense.

Lots of stuff to be improved here. Have a good day ma'am!

I personally like this approach:

1. I like to get something like "Anchor as character" is in Writer for
Calc too. Such anchored object would always be completely inside its
parent cell (which may be merged cells too). The position would be
relative to the anchor, the same way as it is now for "anchor to frame"
in Writer.

Snapping to grid while creating or modifying is not persistent. You
loose alignments, when the column widths or row heights are changed.
Nevertheless the currently available snapping can be improved.

2. I like to get formatting styles for form controls for all modules,
not only in Calc. Such formatting style would contain all the settings,
which are now already possible for graphic objects in Draw/Impress.

3. I like to get formatting styles for graphic objects in Writer and
Calc, so that graphic objects and form controls are handled equally in
all modules.

Kind regards
Regina
