[users@httpd] Starting httpd2 (prefork) failed

I am having trouble starting apache2 on suse9.1.
The command
# /etc/init.d/apache2 start
results in
Starting httpd2 (prefork) failed

and puts the following two lines in the logfile.
[warn] Init: Session Cache is not configured [hint: SSLSessionCache]
[notice] suEXEC mechanism enabled (wrapper: /usr/sbin/suexec2)

It is the default install of apache2 with suse9.1 professional.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated, my googling has not
found anything useful.
