Oh also, I think someone mentioned at the Hadoop Summit that there was work going on on a pure native webhdfs client. I don't know much about this work, but it's the kind of thing that should get its own subdirectory if we choose to include it.

There's a proposal to move fuse_dfs out of contrib at HDFS-3451. This patch doesn't move fuse_dfs.

If fuse-dfs cannot be built, it is currently silently ignored. This means that the native build will work fine on non-Linux systems or systems where the fuse libraries are not installed. It might be worth re-introducing -Pfuse as a way to force the build to fail if the fuse-dfs libraries can't be found. But that's a separate issue from this JIRA.

Thanks. +1 I removed the fuse packages and built a native tarball after fulling nuking the build dirs (due to HDFS-3669) for sanity.

Hey Nicholas,
The idea is that fuse-dfs is moving to src/main/native so it's part of the regular native build structure (though still only built when a flag is passed), we don't want to mix libhdfs and fuse-dfs (and any other native code we add) in the same directory. We used to have a "libhdfs" dir where all the libhdfs code lived, this is just reintroducing that, ie we should do this even if we don't plan to add more native code as it makes sense for libhdfs code to live in a directory called libhdfs.

It seemed easier just to put the svn commands and patch command into a script. So here it is, do.sh. If you run it from the root of the svn repo, it will perform the move.
I also moved fuse_dfs out of contrib and into src/main/native, as discussed in HDFS-3451, since it seems like we want to do that too, and it's easier to combine them. Let me know if you want me to split that out again.

Hey Colin,
Script looks good, I had to update it slightly to reflect the latest libhdfs changes.
Looks like fuse-dfs now compiles by default whereas it previously only built when -Pfuse was passed, we need to preserve that behavior since we support the native build on non-linux systems.
