Authentification HELP!!!

Hello,
I want an LDAP authentification for my portal. I generate an
xml file from a ldap query. But the problem is that I can't get the
password (from the ldap server)! 
The authentification for the user works, but not the password.
How is it possible to integrate the user/password system from my ldap
server into my portal?
Is there any help somewhere? I didn't find any documentation!
