There are still a lot (all?) the old ant build.xml files in the repo following the conversion to gradle.  Some are still needed for the (unconverted) java7/android platform build retrolambda processing.  It appears that the rest can, and should be, removed.

As part of this JIRA if it's rather easy to further reduce the code in the top level build.xml (or common-build.xml) then maybe do that too.  Otherwise address in follow-on item.
