Done as follows:

I've just remove mail.jar from CVS, and changed the build/build.xml to
complain if they are missing from the lib directory.

If you don't want to have to look around again for the mail.jar file,
just move it out of the lib dir, "cvs update lib" and put it back.

I'll answer myself: org.apache.commons.codec.binary.Base64, in the
commons-sandbox, shortly scheduled for Release.

I don't have time to further remove dependencies for Base64
encoding/decoding today, and I want to remove offending jars today ;-)

I've half cooked the substitution of all the Base64 stuff to use the
commons one.

Oops, JLoginUser uses SimpleMail (in turbine) and requires mail.jar for
compilation, looking for javax.mail.MessagingException.

So I moved to an option where mail.jar is needed for compilation. In any
case, if turbine-2 encapsulated the Exception in a TurbineException,
jetspeed would be completely free from the dependency (I think).

I think that I can modify QuestionnaireAction to remove javax.activation and
javax.mail dependencies. Give me a day or so. Thanks!

I'm currently dealing with mail.jar and jaf.jar

jaf.jar causes failure in just:

[sgala@patusan jakarta-jetspeed]$ find src/java -name "*.java" -exec
grep -l "javax.activation" {} \;
src/java/org/apache/jetspeed/modules/actions/portlets/QuestionnaireAction.java

while javax.mail is more heavily used:

[sgala@patusan jakarta-jetspeed]$ find src/java -name "*.java" -exec
grep -l "javax.mail" {} \;
src/java/org/apache/jetspeed/modules/actions/portlets/QuestionnaireAction.java
src/java/org/apache/jetspeed/services/security/turbine/TurbineUserManagement.java
src/java/org/apache/jetspeed/util/Base64.java

Most of the use (below) is just for Base64 encoding/decoding

src/java/org/apache/jetspeed/services/security/turbine/TurbineUserManagement.java
src/java/org/apache/jetspeed/util/Base64.java

The rest is, again, QuestionnaireAction.jar

Two questions:

1.) I'm quite sure it has to be a commons Base64 encoder/decoder, which
would save the more difficult issues. Anyone knows?

2.) Is QuestoinnaireAction worth being compiled in the default
distribution? it could be conditionally compiled, if jaf.jar and
mail.jar are there, and documented for people wanting to use it.

Regards,
      Santiago

I'm still using Tomcat 3.2.1 to match the servlet API level of the version
of WebSphere we're using in the final deployment. I see now that both
activation and mail jars are also distributed with Tomcat 4. How is it that
they can distribute these and we can't?

It is in tomcat4 common/lib directory, at least in my package.

It could be a servlet container issue? Which version are you using?

If it is not in common servlet containers, we should make it into a FAQ.

It seems this .jar is still needed by Torque at runtime? Or is it my JDK
version, 1.3.1_02-b02? Perhaps I need Enterprise Edition.
