   I don't think I was clear on my first point. The reason that I'd like to go with a more specific plugin name rather than the more general "compact_start" is that the intent for this is very specific for upgrades to existing indices across the clustered purge deployment. If its more general then a) our single load of ddocs isn't usable and historically speaking it'll get a bit odd on the intended use for it when there's not a whole lot else that can be done.
   
   However, as a separate unrelated PR I'd be perfectly happy to see the start/finish compaction hooks that could be used by the compaction daemon or some other tooling that someone wanted. Although that has the caveat that not all storage engines require compaction so :shrug: on whether it'd be worthwhile.
