[Bug 124252] New: saving (*.doc) footnote with more than 1 custom symbol fails

https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=124252

            Bug ID: 124252
        Issue Type: DEFECT
Summary: saving (*.doc) footnote with more than 1 custom symbol
                    fails
           Product: Writer
           Version: 4.0.1
          Hardware: Mac
                OS: Mac OSX, 10.8
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P3
         Component: save-export
          Assignee: issues@openoffice.apache.org
          Reporter: gvalladao@gmail.com
                CC: issues@openoffice.apache.org

1) put a footnote to a given text with Insert > Footnote/Endnote > Numbering:
Character: ** > OK
2) save in *.doc format (does not occur if saved as *.odt)
3) reopen document: the second asterisk is there, but removed to the right, in
the beginning of footnote text.

Also happens with endnotes.

--- Comment #14 from beckyfiedler <op...@beckyfiedler.com> ---
I am unable to replicate this problem using AOO 4.0.1 using Mac OS 10.8.5.

My steps
1. Create a paragraph of lorem ipsum text.
2. Add footnote at end of paragraph (Insert-->Footnote) using ** as the
numbering.
3. Save in Word 97/2000/XP (.doc) format
4. Open .doc file in MS Word 2011.

The footnote number at the end of the paragraph appears to be in the proper
place as does the number in the footnote at the bottom of the page.

See FootnoteAOOMac.png and FootnoteWordMac.png for screenshots of how this
appears in OpenOffice Writer and MS Word 2011, respectively.

I am now able to replicate the problem gvalladao reports on AOO 4.0.1 using Mac
OS 10.8.5.

My steps
1. Create a paragraph of lorem ipsum text.
2. Add footnote at end of paragraph (Insert-->Footnote) using ** as the
numbering.
3. Save in Word 97/2000/XP (.doc) format
4. Open .doc file in AOO 4.0.1.

The second character in the footnote number is moved to the right by
approximately one space.

This problem occurs with other special characters that are doubled (i.e. @@) as
well as two special characters that are not repeated (i.e. &$)

Hello,

This is odd. When I open your attachments, aterbeek, footnote.doc and endnote
doc.doc the asterisk does appear removed to the right on the note. Maybe this
bug is exclusive to the mac version?
I attach the same test made by me with the result of the asterisk appearing
removed to the right (that is, actually in the text area of the footnote). See
if you also see it that way.

I was unable to replicate the bug described. The steps that I took were:

1) Opened Open Office Writer 4.0.1 in Windows 7

2) Typed some words into OO Writer.

3) Went to Insert--Footnote/Endnote. Changed the numbering to character and
entered ** in the box to the right. For type, I first chose Footnote and then
did Endnote. Clicked OK.

4) Another test that I did for the footnote/endnote was changing the numbering
to character and entered **> in the box to the right. For type, I first chose
Footnote and then did Endnote. Clicked OK.

5) Saved the documents as Footnote.odt and Footnote.doc for the Footnote and
Endnote.odt and Endnote.doc for the Endnote. When choosing doc, I changed the
save as type to .doc from the OO Writer. Also, when saving to .doc format, I
chose the option to keep current format and not save in ODF format.

6) Retrieved all the documents and compared them. I didn't see any of the
asteriks to the right. Both asteriks were in the same place prior to me saving
my document for both footnote and endnote.

Attaching screenshots for the ** test.

That is strange. Maybe we have to wait and see if someone with a Mac can
reproduce the error.
Also I noticed that on my document the notes appear always on a grey
background, which doesn't seem to be the case on aterbeek's screenshots.
I'm attaching screenshots of what I see.

beckyfielder, I believe the footnote appears normally when opening in Word.
The point is to save it as .doc, close the file and reopen it in AOO.
See my screenshots.
