[jira] Created: (COUCHDB-951) Test DB upgrade for 1.0.x to 1.1.0

Test DB upgrade for 1.0.x to 1.1.0
----------------------------------

                 Key: COUCHDB-951
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/COUCHDB-951
             Project: CouchDB
          Issue Type: Test
    Affects Versions: 1.1
            Reporter: Robert Newson
             Fix For: 1.1

As the on-disk format has changed (for Range header support for attachments) extensive testing of db upgrades should be performed.

The Range upgrade occurs on compaction, so it should suffice to;

1) create a db with 1.0.x
2) upgrade to 1.1.0
3) compact
4) verify db

I will be working on scripts to automate as much as possible.

download the windows test script from https://github.com/wincouch/couchdb-1.0-1.1-upgrade-tester/raw/windows/run.cmd to same folder
run & report back any issues with script to dch on irc or in jira.

Jan, i just ran the last version of the script, unfortunately it fails, there SHA digest mismatches:

I'll try helping investigating why this happens.
Note: on Linux, dd accepts only the size prefix "M", and not "m" (lowercase) like the script has

I just ran the script in my Ubuntu box and it passed.

To run this on Linux, you need to replace the calls to "basename -s .bin $bin" with "basename $bin .bin", since the basename command doesn't have a -s flag on Linux.

I made another update. The script now creates the binary test files on the fly. It also tests larger attachment sizes. You will need at least 600MB free disk space to run this. If all passes, the script cleans up after itself, if you get an error, you may want to manually remove the generated files with git clean -fdx.

I updated the script with more tests.

It now tests storing binary files of size 4095, 4096, 4097 and 8191, 8192, 8193 bytes.

The script and test binaries now live in a repo: https://github.com/janl/couchdb-1.0-1.1-upgrade-tester

To compare original and updated binaries, I use `openssl sha`, so this is now a runtime requirement.

Let me know if this a) adequately tests an upgrade and b) works for you.

> As the on-disk format has changed (for Range header support for attachments) extensive testing of db upgrades should be performed.
> The Range upgrade occurs on compaction, so it should suffice to;
> 1) create a db with 1.0.x
> 2) upgrade to 1.1.0
> 3) compact
> 4) verify db
> I will be working on scripts to automate as much as possible.

[jira] [Commented] (COUCHDB-951) Test DB upgrade for 1.0.x to 1.1.0

Jan Lehnardt commented on COUCHDB-951:
--------------------------------------

I made a script that sets up two couches 1.0.x and 1.1.x in /tmp, creates a db and doc with attachment in 1.0.x, copies it to the 1.1.x install, validates the attachment is still fine.

Tested on Mac OS X 10.6.7, should be cross (UNIX) platform though. This assumes all CouchDB dependencies are set up and ready to go, you may need to adjust the respective ./configure lines to your local setup.

Finally, this needs actual comprehensive tests, Robert said he had some ideas, feel free to plug this in here, thanks for your help!

Thanks Filipe, I updated the script in my repo with the fix. Turns out BSD basename can do without the -s.
