CloudStack UIX
Hello All,
I am Sonny Chhen the Sr. Visual Designer on CloudStack. I wanted to share with you all a few ideas we have in the works on trying to improve upon the user-interface and user-experience. I would love to hear your feedback and any other possible ideas on how we can improve CloudStack. I'll try to answer any questions as well. Please see the wiki link below and let me know your thoughts.

Sounds interesting. Could you elaborate more about jaxspot? What's the difference between
Bus.local and bus.remote? bus.remote meaning send message to server? What's the publish mean?
Ideally, if there is a framework that works like this way:
1. client sends an async command, e.g. startvm, to server.
2. mgt server sends a notification to client, after startvm command finished or failed.
3. client gets the notification, then update ui accordingly.
In the client side, don't need to queryAsyncJobResult for all the async API anymore, maybe it's will be easier to programming the web...(I am not a JavaScript programmer, just curious).

Cloudstack UI in a developper point of view.
Hi, I works on a SWFIT UI extention for Cloudstack and I'have some feedback
to add at the conversation ;)
First the UI go in the good direction in term of vision (REST), the client
is an appliction who convers with the server through ajax call.
Where I am not agree is with the implementation choice.
I'm one of the creator of a multiplatform (desktop and tablet / mobile)
application http://www.jaxspot.com.
And we have created many tool / lib to improve the usage of Rich HTML5
Client in the same vision of Cloudstack
The objectif is to have an application platform extensible and easing to
maintaint and improve (add feature as plugin).
A - simplicity
Cloudstack UI is based on old and heavy technology in term of usage and
deployment (=> JSP)
1 - We have created a javascript i18n support in json (remove all
dependencies with the JSP approch with property setting and specific JSP
code usage)
https://github.com/Ovea/i18n
2 - A very light templating tool for some rare case
https://github.com/Ovea/dynamic-markup (when all page need to be i18n and
not anly label text or fields)
3 - A compressor / minifier of JS server side.
https://github.com/Ovea/virtual-resources
4 - A client side service storage https://github.com/Ovea/js-storage
5 - A real REST usage (APIServer can be removed and replaced with some
specialized class with Java Jersey framework)
With this approch we removed the dependecy and the usage of JSP. So the
code is now pure Html5, JS, CSS3. Every web developpeur can work on it
without knowledg of JSP.
B - Power
Cloudstack UI javascript is complex and have a event model to simple and
it's not based on existing toolkit or frammework
so the learnig curve is high. The components are custom and not fully
functional (treeView for exemple => delete node)
1 - We created a Eventbus engine in JS with and extention to the
serverside through a transparent support of CometD so JMS on Netty
messaging cans be redriected to the client
https://github.com/Ovea/cometd
https://github.com/Ovea/js-eventbus
so we can communicate througt event client<->client / client<->server
code looks like :
jaxspot.bus.local.topic('/event/project/updated).publish(project);
jaxspot.bus.local.topic('/event/project/updated).subscribe(function(project)
{});
jaxspot.bus.remote.topic('/event/notify/project/deleted).publish(project);
This approch is a REAL improvement in term of power (what we can do) and
complexity of client side code
2 - We use JQuery mobile also for a Web App but only the navigation model
(not the mobile part) and we have
simplified it's usage through the event bus
https://github.com/Ovea/jquery-mobile-contribs
So when a page is loaded by JQM we be notified by the event bus (the
event are automaticly published)
Sample :
my.bus.local.topic('/event/ui/view/pageinit/home').subscribe(function(page)
{
do something when the page is initialized
});
my.bus.local.topic('/event/ui/view/pageshow/home').subscribe(function(page)
{
do something when the page is showed
});
C - Testatbility
In cloudstack there is no automated test on the UI
We use Testatoo to write Automated UI test
https://github.com/Ovea/testatoo-html4
Code looks like :
assertThat(page(), contains(
infoLink,
transferLink
));
clickOn(infoLink);
My two cents ;)
Regards.

RE: CloudStack UIX
Posted by Sonny Chhen <So...@citrix.com>.
First off, Thank You everyone for your feedback. This is good to hear in terms of trying to improve upon the CloudStack experience.
A few things to note:
Too many clicks:
We have heard the feedback about multiple clicks and are working on trying to limit the amount. Our first steps to working toward this goal can be found in the new infrastructure page where we will be providing quick links to the Zones, pods, clusters, host, etc...that will take you to a global list of the properties regardless of zone selected. We would appreciate feedback on where you would see most of your time being spent so that we can find a way for you to reach that destination sooner.
More info less action:
As Pranav mentioned in the earlier response, we are toying with the idea of adding more information to the table/list view with fewer actions required by the user. I'll add a post with screenshots to the wiki for a better explanation.
Customizable content and pluggable framework:
If you take a look at the wiki and click on the "Flip Dashboard" link, you'll see an example of a completely revamped dashboard. The concept here is to add not only monitoring information but common actions such as create a vm, create a zone, etc...It would be ideal to have the user add whatever common used functionality to this dashboard to make ease of use for them. If this is an idea you would like us to pursue then please let us know and we will try to work towards it.
I'll be posting more concepts and designs on the wiki and will be answering more questions as they come in. Once again Thank You all for the feedback and I hope these answers helped.

Pluggable UI and job UI are feature requirements that we need to implement, I guess Sonny would like the feedbacks about general UIX ideas.
Maybe I'm a too boring person, I actually like how Microsoft Outlook navigates, with sliding tab + single tree pane. For frequent actions, how about to allow per-user UI profile? Allow creating customized UI profile, providing UI profile persistence so that people can always go back to where he was left off, etc

Interesting idea, but would probably require some design concepts to
see if it would be useful / usable.
> - A simple collapsible tree view of the resources
I'm not certain I agree with a tree view for two reasons: First, a
large scale environment typically has too many elements for a tree to
be the best method of navigation. Second, it leads to the same type
of problem of too many clicks to get to something important.
Those two reservations can sometimes be dealt with pretty elegantly by
coupling a tree with a really simple (but useful) quick search
feature.

RE: CloudStack UIX
Posted by Alex Huang <Al...@citrix.com>.
I agree. At its core, CloudStack UI is a management console. For management consoles, the focus should be on how to do something quickly with less clicks/keystrokes and viewing more with less space. I think 3.0 was a big step in that direction.
For CloudStack Admin Console, we need to innovate in the following areas. These all have to do with being able to do more with less action.
- Pluggable UI to configure plugins
- A monitor pane where resources can be put into and taken out of monitoring mode
- A simple collapsible tree view of the resources
- Jobs management ui
I think the UI in the link can be great to be shown as what can be done for the end user UI though. There is a lot less things to manage in that U.

I think being able to add/remove columns gives a user the ability to decide what's important to them and sort on it.

I think it's fine to have it pop if you hover over an item, but clicking on it should bring up the same options as well.

Customizable display columns in the UI. I don't want to hover over each
of the VM to get the information that I am interested in. I want to have
the ability to add a column (Say TemplateID) to the VM instance display
and I should have the ability to sort on that column. Any information that
is displayed on the details page of an item should be available at the
summary page too as an column. With this I can scan visually to find out
related information on all VMs without hovering or clicking on each item.
This applies to all pages where we display information (VMs, Storage,
Network, hosts, clusters and so on).

Hi everyone,
[UI developer here]
I also agree that the tree structure was one of the most appealing aspects of cloudstack 2.0 . It gives an overview of the architecture straight away without navigating deeply into the UI , leading to lesser number of clicks as well compared to the current scenario where the user has to navigate through Infrastructure -> Zones-> then finally to the Compute and Storage tab. However , adding more and more drop down menus to display whatsoever parameters like (network/storage/Routers/Services etc) on the main UI would render it more cluttered in a way. I mean you got to make a compromise somewhere.
Another brilliant idea which Sonny came up with was that of a quick View for a VM where just hovering over the instance name could display the parameters/functionalities/tasks associated with a VM . This would definitely minimize the number of clicks as well where the end user can perform multiple tasks from the same window, also reducing the extent of unnecessary navigation.( Attached the image for the same) . Please have a look and give suggestions for the same.
Sonny can elaborate more on the UI-plugin architecture which has been planned as an upcoming requirement.

As mentioned on the UIX document on confluence, since the goal is to make it something that can be managed from a tablet the sliding panels are fine. The general complaint isn't that the sliding panels aren't good but that to get to the information we use on a day-to-day basis it takes too many clicks. I think this is probably a good universal problem-solver for the number of clicks. Some kind of a 'quick links' or 'favorites' section where you can simply add the page you're looking at to the favorites section to make it easier to navigate.
Not related to the previous points, having the ability to sort on a column would be great too. It was a suggestion from one of our users that I didn't even think about but when the instances are listed on the page they're in no particular order that they can see and the ability to sort by name, zone, state, etc would be nice. I know there's a filter, but maybe I want to see all and just sort them differently.
Onto the UIX specifics...
Sliding Nav:
I think it's fine as long as it was extended out when you first login or do something to bring attention to the small "+" in the upper-left corner (it took me a bit before I noticed it and users aren't always as kind/patient).
Filterable search:
I'm afraid I just don't understand the point of this. So it would create this collapsed list after I search/filter for some value. And clicking on the "show more" would show all records again? What's wrong with the current way of filtering with the drop-down picklist?
Flip dashboard:
In terms of functionality it's nice, and the ability to add/remove widgets from the page will make it a very good red light/green light way of viewing things. And the flip looks cool :). And assuming that each widget can be clicked on to drill down into that specific item, this would be particularly good for tablet users.

[UI developer here]
Our primary focus for the UI design for 3.0 was ease of use, since that
was a major problem in the 2.0.x UI. In particular, we didn't want to
overload/overwhelm a new user with a ton of options when they load the UI.
The unfortunate side effect to this is more clicks to get to specific
functionality, such as LB/PF rules. It's a tricky problem since adding too
many shortcuts/dropdowns to the main UI would bring back the design
problems that we had to solve for 3.0.
We've thought of adding more toolbar 'quick links' or possibly keyboard
shortcuts for frequent users to access their commonly-used functionality.
Ideally these could be customizable and stored in user preferences. Any
other ideas?

Agreed. The current UI design could do with a major revamp, the constant
clicking is nothing but annoying. Many of my users have commented on how
annoying the interface is, not to mention the complaints I've received
about Firewall Rules and Port Forwards not being on the same screen. I
like the idea of a drop down menu or tree-based menu (like the tree in
CS 2.2.x).
Since 4.0.0 will be the first Apache release of CS, I wonder if a new UI
could be implemented? (hint, hint ... nudge, nudge) ;)

If it is not possible to get things done at one or at most 2,3 clicks, the UI navigation would become a painful experience for people who use it at daily basis.

My US$0.02:
The animations look nice - especially when I was new to the product. When actually trying to get things done, though, they just slow me down. In particular, what gets annoying is when I have to click through several animations to get to a page, like getting to a CS host (6 clicks) or getting to details on a virtual router (8 clicks). I understand these aren't everyday tasks, but personally I'd prefer a "standard" drop-down navigation that lets me just get to what I want.
