Spanish -- what variaties do we support?

A question we received on Facebook that I did not have an answer for.

Do we support Latin American Spanish?

I know there are differences in the spoken language, but are there
many in writing?

Is there any demand for a translation?

Do we have spell checking dictionary support for Latin American Spanish?

Sorry if the question is confusing. I'll report back what you tell me
to the user on Facebook.

There are many people who know the issue better than me, but at the
moment we distribute one Spanish version and we host a variety of
Spanish dictionaries on the Extensions site.

I don't recall anyone writing to this list and volunteering to make a
variant of the Spanish UI translation.

Many, many of them. Search "diccionario" on the Extensions site:

http://extensions.openoffice.org/en/search?query=diccionario&sort_by=field_project_stats_year&sort_order=DESC

You will see dozens of variants of the same dictionary, released by the
same project and specialized for specific countries/cultures.

Regards,
   Andrea.

No we have general spanish guidelines and are as standard as we can. I
think is a better job than trying to break down into different
coloquialisms which exist not just between countries but also within the
same country.

What we support is the dictionaries and wordbooks, this is where the
localization happen. There is a group that work on these dictionaries.

Which has always been a dragging issue not just for spanish community but
for open source in general. Lack of documentation is an issue as a hole, to
also undertake a fragmentation of it in order to support certain
differences.
